About Stephen
I’m from Glasgow, Scotland, and have worked as a teacher in France and Spain. My favourite pastime is learning languages - I speak French, Spanish and Catalan, I speak little bits of Italian and German, and I’m currently learning Gaelic, Mandarin and Esperanto. I also love reading horror novels and playing piano/singing.

Hello! Bonjour! Hola! I’m Stephen and languages are my passion. I have dedicated almost 3 decades of my life to learning, researching and teaching languages to people of all ages, from primary-school aged children to retirees. I have an MA (Hons) in French and Spanish language from the University of Glasgow, with 100% scores in my spoken language modules and my undergraduate dissertation. I also received academic prizes in 2011 and 2012 for my language skills. In 2016, I won a highly competitive studentship to study at the University of Edinburgh, obtained my MSc in Applied Linguistics (with Distinction) in 2018, and my PhD in Linguistics and English Language in 2025. My research focuses on language policy, especially in French, Spanish and Catalan-speaking countries. I have lived and worked in France and Spain over several years, and frequently use both languages in my daily life. I have also taught both languages as well as English as a Foreign Language at all levels of proficiency, from absolute beginners to proficient users. My methodology is adaptive to your language learning objectives, and how you’d like to progress. Most of the time, I’ll focus on helping you to develop your speaking skills from the very first lesson. I’ll also try to help you develop your vocabulary and grammar according to what you need to know, and what you’re struggling with most. We can also work to develop your reading, writing, translation, and even cultural knowledge of the Francophone/Hispanophone/English-Speaking world. We can also work to prepare you for any exams you may have coming up, and work with materials and subjects that might be relevant and useful. We’ll work at your pace, and - most importantly - we’ll make sure you feel like you’re making progress and hitting your goals, all while enjoying the process! More generally I can also help you to prepare for or cope with university work. I have substantial experience supporting academic writing, and can advise on clarity, cohesion, sentence structure and argumentation. I have a working knowledge of the Scottish credit and qualifications framework, and the exam system more generally, and can become more familiar with English/Welsh/other systems if needed. For EFL, I have taught content for the TOEIC, TOEFL and Cambridge Advanced English exams. I can also help to support DELF and DELE exam preparation for both French and Spanish. I love sharing my passion for languages with others, and I really thrive on helping others achieve their goals. I hope we can take the first (or next) steps on your language learning journey together!

I offer one free 1-hour lesson to get to know you, your prior language learning experience, and what you’d like to achieve. If you think you’d like to continue your tutoring journey with me, I offer online classes at £30/hour (or slightly less if booked in bulk). I can also offer 1-1 in-person lessons in the Edinburgh area for £30/hour (plus transport costs).
