Hello! I’m Yanique, your dedicated English tutor with a passion for helping students become confident readers, writers and speakers. Teaching Plan – English Reading & Language (4 Weeks)
Tutor: Yanique Clarke, M.Sc. (UWI Mona)
Format: 1-2hour sessions (Online or In-Person)
Target Group: Primary to adult learners (Beginner–Intermediate)
Focus Areas: Reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and communication skills.
WEEK 1 – Foundations of Reading & Vocabulary
Goal: Build comfort with pronunciation, basic vocabulary, and reading aloud.
Objectives:
Recognize common sight words
Read short paragraphs fluently
Practice pronunciation and intonation
Activities:
Word wall introduction (5–10 new words)
Read short stories or passages aloud
Vocabulary games (matching, flashcards, spelling bees)
Pronunciation drills using phonics or phonetic breakdown
Assessment:
Short oral reading exercise
Identify words and meanings in context
WEEK 2 – Understanding What You Read
Goal: Strengthen comprehension and expression.
Objectives:
Identify main ideas and details
Answer comprehension questions
Retell short stories in own words
Activities:
Reading comprehension passages
Guided reading and discussion
“Summarize the story” oral activity
Vocabulary-in-context exercises
Assessment:
Written and oral comprehension quiz
Summary writing (3–5 sentences)
WEEK 3 – Building Grammar & Writing Confidence
Goal: Introduce simple sentence structure and grammar rules.
Objectives:
Understand nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.
Form grammatically correct sentences
Write short paragraphs
Activities:
Grammar games (sentence scramble, fill-in-the-blank)
Writing prompts (“My Favorite Day,” “A Trip to the Beach”)
Editing short sentences for errors
Peer review or group sharing (if applicable)
Assessment:
Grammar worksheet
Write and present a 5-sentence paragraph
WEEK 4 – Speaking & Communication Skills
Goal: Improve confidence in spoken English and conversation flow.
Objectives:
Use vocabulary naturally in conversation
Practice listening and responding clearly
Engage in role-plays
Activities:
Role-plays (ordering food, introducing yourself, asking for directions)
Listen-and-repeat pronunciation practice
Conversational games (“Find Someone Who…”)
Reading dialogue aloud with expression
Assessment:
Oral presentation or role-play
Self-assessment & tutor feedback session
