About Kian
I’m a Sheffield-based maths graduate from Trinity College Cambridge with over 5 years of tutoring and mentoring experience. This has included both in-person and online lessons, as well as delivering lectures and training at the UKMT Spring Selection Camps for the International Maths Olympiad.
I offer tuition in:
- Maths admissions tests (STEP, MAT and TMUA)
- Oxbridge maths interviews (including mocks)
- Olympiad maths
- A level Maths and Further Maths
My past tutees have accepted places at both Cambridge and Oxford, and qualified to the second round of the British Maths Olympiad.
I've also had major success in various maths competitions: my team won the Mathsbombe competition (organised by the University of Manchester) in 2020; I was invited to a UKMT camp at Oxford University as one of the top 24 students of my age group; and I came 4th place out of the top 10 UK students who were entered for the IGO (an international geometry competition). I hope to apply for Maths at Cambridge University next year.

In our first lesson, we’ll chat about your aims and any particular areas you’d like to focus on. I’ll then make a plan moving forward to ensure you can achieve your goals.
When starting a new topic, we'll spend a lesson going over the most important concepts you’ll encounter in it. This lets you solidify your understanding of the basics, and helps me identify what would benefit you the most to work on. I’m a big believer in using diagrams, analogies and plenty of examples to break down complex ideas into more digestible pieces.
We’ll spend the majority of lessons solving problems I’ve specifically picked to develop your use of certain techniques and ideas. I encourage my students to ask questions and discuss their thought process while doing this, and I give careful hints to guide them towards a solution. These two-way conversations are a great way to develop your critical and analytical thinking skills, so will make you more confident in tackling unfamiliar problems yourself!
If you’re aspiring to study maths at Cambridge or Oxford, we’ll also devote some time to discussing interview technique. A lot of the skills that interviewers are looking for will already be covered in the problem solving lessons, but we’ll supplement this with mock interviews so you’re as prepared as possible.

Kian was an excellent tutor. He helped me prepare for my Cambridge Mathematics interview and for BMO1. He was very flexible with lesson times and highly responsive on WhatsApp. In our lessons, we covered a wide range of material in great depth (he knows his stuff!), and he was consistently available by message outside of lesson hours for any help required.
