About Richard
Richard is a freelance musician, educator, composer, orchestrator, and music producer based in Los Angeles. He completed a Bachelors of Music in Tuba Performance and Composition from Azusa Pacific University graduating cum laude. He continued his studies further at APU by completing a Masters of Music in Composition with the help of a performance assistantship graduating cum laude.
As a musician, he plays tuba and bass in all styles and loves collaborating with other like–minded musicians in creating new music. This love of music creativity also fuels his compositional interests. Although primarily trained in classical and jazz mediums, Richard enjoys learning about new music and has continued his music studies at LACC learning about Latin and West African music. This life–long learner mindset has enabled Richard to become an effective educator in teaching and growing students to become the best they can be.
As a music producer, Richard has recorded and mixed his personal projects and those of his students and peers. To improve on these skills, he went to LACC to complete a certificate in Music Technology and hopes to learn about cinema sound while growing in his other skills. Richard also maintains a private studio that offers both individual and group lessons.
Thankful for the opportunities and teachings given to him, Richard hopes to give back to his students as generously and aims to equip them with the skills they need to succeed in their creative/academic journey.

I teach intermediate bass guitar. I have a unique approach in teaching bass students as I started out as a double bass player. This perspective informs my pedagogy by focusing on string technique and hand positioning which I think is not focused on that much in regards to bass guitar players. If you want effective, efficient, and comfortable playing on bass guitar, I would love to help you out.
I teach what role the bass serves in an ensemble context as it is a very unique and demanding role as the instrument is the bridge between the band and the percussion. As such, rhythm, harmony, and even melody are needed to be a successful bassist. A diverse selection of genres will explored as the musical output for bass is very extensive and requires a lot of training to be proficient in.
If you are a rusty bassist getting back into the saddle, or an aspiring newcomer, I would like to help you achieve the next step in your bass journey!
