About Cary

I have had over 20 years of teaching experience in a broad variety of styles and subjects, Drama, English, Art, Humanities and Sociology in the UK, Europe and Asia; from MYP/IBDP (over four years of experience) through IGCSE and A Levels. My entire life has been a prime example of flexibility and adaptation, very much the road ‘less travelled by’…. I believe in innovation, utilising the advances in technology, to aid the delivery of an individualised and differentiated course of learning. As a professional Actor/Singer/Dancer in the UK (and abroad), I discovered that I found myself happiest in the functions of facilitators; as Director, Company Manager, Acting Coach and Tutor; and have turned to teaching in a 'third' career because I believe in the power of Drama as a positive force in education. As a linguist and a ‘Drama’ person, I understand language development and the Early Modern of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, as well as poetry in all its’ forms. In 2004 and 2007, two of my pupils used their LAMDA Advanced Level Communication Awards to aide their successful applications to Cambridge University. In 2015, one of my pupils (who achieved a Gold medal in Musical Theatre) gained a place at Italia Conti (a London Drama school) on a full scholarship.

About the lesson

I believe in engaging the individual to understand what must be learned. My theories of education (Teaching and Learning) have modified over time and experience, but I cling to a metaphor I developed a few years ago: Teachers are Forest Rangers leading a group through a forest, pointing out major trees, plants, wild-life, emphasising the inter-relatedness of the environment, indicating that there is more to see beyond the path the group is on, engaging the individual learners within the group, sometimes forging a new path for that group (to explore specific features they, individually and collectively, become interested in), but ensuring the whole group arrive successfully at the other end, having achieved the prescribed goal and prepared to go onto their own (individual) further pathways. In the end, if I can motivate Independent, Self-actuated Learners with collaborative, critical and creative thinking, I feel that I have succeeded.
