Short Story:
1. Theme: what's your story about?
2. Plot: what happens?
3. Character: make sure the main character is somebody the reader will root for and care about.
4. The Writing: you have your own style, don't lose it, but make sure you're clear and you achieve the main goal of writing: to put in your reader's mind the emotions, passions and ideas you want to convey.
Essay:
1. Topic Ideas: coming up with what to write about.
2. Brainstorming: expound on the topic -- its history, what's surprising or interesting, why people would want to bother learning about it.
3. Outline: begin with something to catch the reader's attention. The middle is where you explain what matters. The end is where you tie everything up.
