About Robert
I'm Robert, and I like to make a passage feel navigable before asking you to repeat it. In a lesson, I may ask you to show me where the next string change happens or which finger could be ready sooner. You do not need to know the technical answer immediately. Pointing to the place where you feel rushed is often enough to give us a useful starting point. We can then build a small plan that you can explain in your own words and try without remembering a long list of instructions.
I will distinguish a mistake in the plan from a movement that simply needs more time to become familiar. If you know where the bow is going but arrive awkwardly, we can make the journey slower and give it more room. If you are unsure of the destination, slowing down alone will not answer the question; we can return to the score, listen to the phrase or mark its important changes. I want feedback to help you decide what to do on the next attempt. Repeating the whole piece after every mistake usually makes that decision harder to see.
A young child might learn a route through imitation and a few easy visual reminders. A teenager might want to understand how a bowing choice changes the energy of a melody. Adults beginning or returning to the violin can work through the practical details without being expected to remember unfamiliar terminology immediately. With advanced students, there is room to examine the preparations behind an interpretation they already have in mind. In each case, I will help you connect a manageable technical plan with the piece you want to play, leaving enough attention for the music itself.

A tune can feel comfortable until the bow needs to move to another string. Then an extra string sounds, the rhythm hesitates, or your arm makes a much larger movement than you expected. We will make that crossing into something you can prepare. On two open strings, you can first find the arm level for each sound, then move between those levels during a silent pause. Adding a short bow stroke lets you hear whether the new string is ready before the note begins. A complete beginner can turn those two notes into a small tune, so the coordination has a musical purpose from the start.
When fingers join the pattern, we will separate the decisions the two hands need to make. You might leave a finger prepared on the next string while the bow finishes its current note, then move the bow along the path we have already established. We can group the notes according to those preparations instead of treating every note as a fresh instruction. For a returning or intermediate player, this can help a familiar passage stop feeling unpredictable. An advanced player might explore faster crossings, different articulations and the timing of a prepared left-hand change. We will keep the movements comfortable and use a small enough passage that you can notice what is happening.
Reading and phrasing will develop alongside this physical planning. Before playing a line, we can identify its starting string, the first change of direction and a useful arrival note. Those landmarks give you somewhere to look ahead instead of following the score one note late. Children can use a short musical route with two or three clear destinations; teenagers and adults can apply the same preparation to repertoire they want to learn. Your practice task will include the difficult crossing, the notes leading into it and the phrase after it. That way, you learn to carry the preparation into actual music rather than becoming good at an isolated exercise alone.
