About Shannon
Hello! My name is Shannon Merlino. I’ve been teaching violin and viola for over 25 years. I hold a bachelors’ and masters’ degree in violin performance, completed all but a dissertation for a DMA in violin performance, and hold a DMA in viola performance - and in between those degrees, I also completed a RYT-500 yoga teaching apprenticeship. (One of the few things I like as much as teaching is getting more educated!) I perform a lot - I am the assistant principal violist in one orchestra, section violist in another, and perform in a string quartet with some of the most amazing musicians I know, too! I enjoy teaching students of all levels, and I like to take a student-centered approach to lessons - we will always focus on what helps students to be in their best musical shape. I use a modified Suzuki approach with many of my students, prioritizing making music right from the start. I focus on technique a lot, too - but from the player’s angle! Rather than working on “right” and “wrong”, I use my own technical geekery along with my background as a yoga teacher to work with my students to find technical solutions that are tailored to their bodies!
