About Nick

Nick discovered swing dancing through West Philly Swingers (UPenn) in 2015 and absolutely fell in love. Just four short months later he began teaching and organizing dances across Philly. To date, Nick has logged 2,500+ dance hours and 300+ teaching hours, and has racked up a host of competition wins across the east coast. He loves coming up with new ideas while staying true to the dance’s rich history. Smiles on the faces of his students and dance floors packed with newbie and veteran dancers alike bring him indescribable joy. To date, Nick has shared the joy of lindy hop through his lessons, events, and shows with over 20,000 people.

There's little that compares to seeing someone walk in the door, whether they're feeling excited, nervous, or overburdended with the many stresses of life, and seeing all that turn to joy with a couple swing outs. I love seeing people who embrace this dance and its rich history, and who dive into the vibrant social community that it still fosters today. Seeing their dance progress (and seeing them realize it too) makes me so, so happy.

I started dancing in September 2015 and fell in love. It really helped me through some tough times, and in December 2015 I decided that I wanted to share the joy that this dance makes me feel with as many people as possible. I started teaching public lessons, private lessons, choreographies, and more multiple times a week and never looked back.

I have attended multiple teacher training weekends led by the top instructors in the scene (Kevin St. Laurent & Jo Hoffberg, Jon Tigert & Jenna Applegarth, and more), mentored under NYC's Rafal Pustelny & Adrienne Weidert, and taught hundreds of hours of lessons over the past six years. I'm constantly refining and improving my teaching through student and fellow teacher feedback.

About the lesson

First off, I make sure that my students are looking to learn some Lindy Hop (or charleston) and not East Coast Swing/Jive/West Coast Swing/other swing forms. Nothing wrong with those, but I'm a Lindy Hopper!

Get to know them. Help them get to know the origins of the music and the culture surrounding swing dancing's formation. From there, focus on locking down the technical secrets to fun and fantastic dances.

Everyone. Middle schoolers. College kids. Data analysts with three left feet. My mom's book club. Vintage partygoers. You name it.

Don't hire a ballroom instructor if you're looking to learn the Lindy Hop. Nothing against ballroom instructors, they're great for ballroom dances. Lindy hop isn't a ballroom dance, though!

There are few things that make me happier than Jazz Attack, Philadelphia's weekly Thursday dance and home for Lindy Hop & Swing. The place is always full of wonderful people swingin' their stress away and diving into the joy that is this dance. It's not fancy. $10 gets you a solid beginner or intermediate lesson and two hours of DJ'ed music. But the feeling of welcome-ness there is unparalelled. Check them out at (concealed information)

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1) Am I excited/willing to go social dancing in addition to lessons?

Social dance is the core of the Lindy Hop, not to mention it's so much fun! I rarely work with students that aren't interested in social dancing.

2) Am I doing this because I want to become technically better? Have more fun? Put on a show for my friends/family?

There's no right or wrong answer here, but it really helps me get you the best type of lesson.

3) Am I ready to have a whole lot of fun?

Because with this dance... it's tough not to!

Details

All lessons run on a sliding scale of $40-80/hr + any studio fees (if applicable) + any travel costs (if applicable). I value my time at $60/hr, but it's important to me that cost is as little a factor as possible when it comes to access to dance.
