About Mariah

I absolutely love forming meaningful relationships with my students and helping them improve in reading, listening, speaking, and writing in Spanish. I have 3 years of experience tutoring English as a second language in Spain. I used to live in Spain for 2.5 years, which was an incredible experience. There, I polished my Spanish-speaking skills and really learned the best ways to teach a langugage to children and adults.

I began tutoring in English when I was 20 years old. I helped a young girl from Vietnam learn English for a year. I read to her and played games with her as well.

I have a degree in Spanish Language and culture from John Carroll University. I also have 2.5 years of experience living in Spain and teaching English as a second language to children and teens ages 3-18. I was placed in 3 different schools: 2 elementary schools and one high school. I spent one school year at each school. I worked directly with Language teachers to create activities for my classes and help them learn about english and the American culture.

About the lesson

I like to start out by asking my student questions about what they feel they need to improve the most. I'll take a look at previous assignments or work that the student has completed to see where the student's strengths and weaknesses lie. I also enjoy getting to know what my students enjoy so that I can integrate that into our lessons, if possible.

I have worked with a wide variety of students of all confidence levels and ages. I have worked with very young students only 3 years of age. With young children, I tend to focus on songs, basic flash cards, games, and videos to enhance learning. With teens and adults, I like to try to find out what they enjoy doing and incorporate it into my lesson.

Look for a teacher who will take the time to get to know you and who truly cares about you. Also look for someone who has a true passion for the language and culture!

I recently received a happy birthday message from 2 students that I have not seen in over 3 years. Their mother told me that I was one of the best teachers that her son's have ever had and that they still think of me.
