About Rachael

Hello!

My name is Rae, and I love languages. I have my bachelor's degree in Spanish, and I've been tutoring in Spanish for close to four years now. I specialize in kids ages 5-15 and adult beginners who might be too embarressed to start otherwise. I encourage everybody to try and encourage mistakes, because how else would we learn?

I don't teach in the "traditional" manner. I evaluate where you, the learner, are, and then encourage functional vocabulary before grammar. Almost anyone can learn to write Spanish, but traditional methods of teaching don't really teach the learner to actually speak it. Spontaneous oral production is difficult, and I'm here to help you master it.

I love watching students be able to put sentences together, and seeing the satisfaction in their faces as they realize it's correct. I'm all about attuning one's ear to the way languages flow - it's how we learned as children, and I believe it's how we should learn moving forward.

I have always been a teacher. My mother owned a preschool, and I grew up helping the teachers manage their students until I was old enough to handle a classroom by myself. I now work as a nanny, and in the wintertimes I teach children how to ski.

I have a bachelor's degree in Spanish from Colorado State University. I spent a semester in Spain honing all my skills and have spend four years tutoring younger children.

About the lesson

I evaluate the student's experience, or lack therof, of language learning. A simple conversation about their experience will do, and then we have a discussion of where we want this journey to go.

I have worked with students as young as four and as old as 24, but I'm willing to work with anybody who's willing to work with me.

Make sure you find a teacher that matches the way you learn. I'm not much for "learning styles," (kinesthetic, auditory, etc), but I do believe students learn in different ways. For me, I've learned the languages I speak by speaking them to myself constantly. I talk to myself all the time in the languages I speak, and it helps me refine my ear to know when I'm potentially making a mistake.

This style doesn't make sense to some people, and that is perfectly fine. Find someone who teaches in a way that makes sense to you.

When I was in Spain, I was talking with a friend of mine who was in a lower-level grammar class. She had just started learning about the subjunctive tense and was utterly lost. (Which, honestly, I don't blame her. It can be difficult!)

I tried explaining it to her in the way I had internalized it, and over the course of about three weeks she started to get into the flow of things. I was proud of her!

I charge 25$ an hour per student, and an extra 10$ per head within the same household. (For a total of 35$ an hour)
