About Janet
Welcome! My names Janet Deand and I received my education at Nipissing University in Ontario, where I earned my Bachelor of Honours in Physical and Health Education with a Minor in Business Administration - Specialization in Marketing, in 2017. In July 2018, I graduated from UBC’s West Kootenay Teacher Education program with my Bachelor of Education. Over the last few years I have been working as a teacher in British Columbia. My current position is Athletic Director, Teacher and Head of the Physical and Health Education Department at Port Hardy Secondary School.
The main reason I wake up every morning is because of my passion for education. I got into teaching physical and health education not only because of my passion and love for sports, but because I love fast-paced work environments that provide the ability to be creative and innovative. I love being a problem solver for my students and I pride myself on the connections I’ve built with them over the years.
Over the years I’ve loved helping mold the minds of young individuals, and building their confidence to succeed in the future is something that I have dedicated my life to.
During my years of teaching, I was always conscious of fostering an environment where community, global perspectives and social responsibility become key fundamentals that will prepare my students to be true world citizens upon graduating. These are values that are very important to me and my own personal leadership philosophy. My goal as a leader is that my students leave at the end of the day feeling supported, respected, and that their opinions are heard. Since starting my career, I’ve made it my mission to make my work environment a safe space for all everyone, where they can share experiences, use their innovative thinking and creativity, to flourish.I love working amongst the leaders of tomorrow and greatly appreciate all the connections I’ve made along the way.
