About Jan
Instruction is with a classical emphasis on sight reading, technique, rhythm and pedaling.
First meeting/audition is no charge. Let's meet and discuss your interest in lessons. I would like to hear you play if you are prepared. A beginning student would learn some familiarity with the piano at the first meeting.
Experienced with beginning, intermediate and advanced and students.
I love teaching one on one. It is a great advantage for both teacher and student to get to know each other and learn what to expect from instruction and effective practice.
I had strong musical immersion and training as a child with many devoted musicians and artists in my family.
After graduating college, I began teaching in a local piano studio and soon after I started a private studio in my home.
I have taught private piano and Music History, Domestic and International Field Studies at three colleges in the Chicago area.

This depends on many factors, no two students are alike.
My process is specifically focused on the individual. For instance, I am not a "methods" teacher, except for very young students and then only briefly. I can explain this more at our first meeting.
Every piano student other than a beginner comes with a history of learning that is always interesting to me. They can be accomplished, or will come with certain technical, rhythmic or reading challenges that require work. I typically play for the student to introduce new music and work with ear training.
My students are typically high achievers in school, sports, and the other arts.
I wouldn't say there is a "type" of student other than they either practice diligently, regularly, or do their best with the time they have. It is always a factor in working with their given skill sets and academic and family schedules.
I have taught age ranges from four years old through high school, college, adults and seniors.
Ask questions. See below.
If you feel comfortable, be prepared to play even if you have a modest background.
Expect work with note learning, sight reading and technique.
Your repertoire will be based in the classical tradition however I am open to learning a favorite piece that you are interested in.
Chicago Symphony concerts.
All that Chicago has to offer in the arts.
Annually I work with Opera Productions as a Supertitest at the College of DuPage, a job that I love.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How long should I practice - how many days a week and for how long? This will depend on your background and your eagerness to learn the music.
Will there be performing opportunities?
Will there be contest opportunities?
Do I need unfettered access to a piano or full keyboard to take lessons? Absolutely, yes.
Any questions are welcome.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor
We started piano lessons for our children when they were in elementary school. Our son Bharat is now a senior in college and our daughter Sruthi is working. Jan is the most gentle, compassionate teacher we have ever worked with. Bharat immediately took to her and he still remembers and finds her advice on “perfect practice” useful. Jan was instrumental in nurturing Bharat’s love for the piano and music in general. We fondly recall the various recitals, music appreciation sessions and opportunities for piano accompaniment that Jan provided as part of her curriculum. Jan is especially good at identifying and working with the unique traits of the students. Jan’s influence on my children has extended beyond just music. We are fortunate to have known her.
We have referred Jan to various families over the years and everyone of them has had a positive experience with her.

Dear Jan Krischer,
I wanted to thank you for all that you have taught Isabel, my daughter. Learning piano and learning how to read music has done a lot for her ability to learn and excel in math. I had read studies that proved the link but I believe it now. Math has been the easiest for her.
Isabel’s piano lessons of five years under your supervision were fun and effective as she learned how to read music and play the piano in a short time.
Your engaging and encouraging methods let her have fun while learning new techniques and music.
The recitals were crucial to building confidence and encouraging and cheering her along with the other students on in their accomplishments.
I would highly recommend your piano classes to everyone in every age level. To quote my daughter “I liked the variety of music I was able to learn at my own pace”.
Thank you again for your part in Isabel’s crucial growing years and helping her become the confident and open minded lady that she is. I strongly believe in the power of music and I highly recommend your piano lessons to anyone interested.
Thank you for your dedication.
Any student would be very fortunate to learn to play music under the thoughtful and experienced Mrs. Jan Krischer. My boys have always said you held their interest, encouraged them to try different music and also taught them about different composers. You were a teacher who cared.
"My son had piano lessons with Jan for 10+ years and found it a rewarding experience. Jan is an exceptional teacher - patient and encouraging. She keeps the kids motivated and interested with the music she picks as well as the repertoires and recitals. I highly recommend Jan as a piano teacher."
