About Mathias
I teach piano, double bass and bass guitar lessons.
I always want to make sure that my student feels the lessons are an enjoyable, fun experience and that they are working with material they are interested in all the while continuously improving and showing results. If you as a student have a specific wish for what you want to work on I am always happy to accommodate that, and I always try to tailor my teaching around the individual students needs and wishes rather than follow a preset system.
What I love most about teaching is seeing the fruits of the knowledge and experience I have accrued over the years take root and grow in a student in a unique and unexpected way. I also love how much I learn from students by teaching.
I enjoy working with music in any capacity. Finding and figuring out what inspires the student to discover the same joy that I have found in music, is one of the reasons I get excited about teaching.
I've always loved teaching and the process of passing on knowledge and skill, and watching how it manifests in the student is always a great experience. Being a freelance musician presentes an ever fluctuating schedule and teaching is a natural compliment to that mode of work.
I have a Masters degree from Manhattan School of Music in performance where I studied with the jazz legend Buster Williams, majoring in jazz double bass. This degree had a significant portion of pedagogy/education included. I also have an undergraduate degree from Jazz Institute Berlin.

I typically start by getting to know the student ie. their level, what their goals/wishes are for the lessons (which could be anything ranging from learning specific pieces of music, to overall improvement as an instrumentalist/musician)
I have the most experience with students ranging from 14 and up, but have also taught younger children from around 6 and up. I have taught people who wanted to simply get to know the piano or bass, all the way up to people with significant experience and knowledge who seek to improve their proficiency on the instrument as well as taking their musicianship to the next level (could be anything from deeper theoretical knowledge, ear training, composing to working on time feel and rhythmic versatility) On bass I have worked with aspiring professionals who are ready to be or already working musicians.

I can emphatically recommend taking lessons with Mathias. He is a thoughtful and dedicated teacher, and was always good at meeting my needs. I took online lessons with him fo a while which worked great despite the challenges that poses.
My lessons with Mathias have been very motivating and fruitful. Being a total beginner when I started taking lessons with him, I didn’t know what to expect but he was very good at making learning the piano less intimidating and more intuitive. Highly recommended!
