About Riley

I am a classically trained pianist that has a passion for teaching students of all ages the joy of creating music. I gave piano lessons for a number of years before grad school, and have looked forward to getting back into piano instruction since graduating. I have more than 15 years experience as a pianist for hire and have a true passion for music.

I bring a casual but personal approach to each student, realizing that all individuals learn at different rates and in different ways. I am happy to accommodate hectic schedules and give lessons virtually or in-person, depending on my clients' preferences. I look forward to hearing from you!

I have always had a strong passion for music. My piano teacher instilled a love of piano music from a young age, and I find it incredibly gratifying to show others that same joy from being able to master a particular style or song. I have also always had a love for education, and currently teach at my alma mater aside from piano lessons.

I had a friend in college (who I knew from our local community) who gave piano lessons and had too many students. One day, in class, she asked me if I had ever considered giving piano lessons. Once I said I was interested, I've never looked back!

I took 13 years of classical lessons myself, and have been a pianist for hire for more than 15 years. I have experience across a number of different genres, and keep up on my own piano skills routinely. I gave lessons for almost 5 years prior to going to grad school, during which I did not have time to continue teaching. I am just now getting back into giving lessons and am so excited to do so.

About the lesson

I typically meet with students and/or their parents (virtually or in-person) to discuss goals and expectations ahead of beginning lessons. From there, we decide on an appropriate starting point for lessons (and the corresponding music books/series). I prefer to individualize lessons for each student, and that can include scheduling lessons on a weekly basis (or less frequently depending on preferences and schedule).

I've worked with students across many different ages and experience. I have experience with both adults and children, as well as total beginners or those who have a few (or more) years of experience under their belt. I am happy to discuss with all my students their goals and expectations and individualize a learning plan.

I'd advise students to find a good fit based on personality and expectations. In my personal experience, instruction goes SO much further when you're able to feel comfortable with your instructor and you can be on the same page about goals and expectations. For most people, there's no one "right" person, but I find it so important to have those conversations up front to ensure it's a good fit.

I was recently able to perform a virtual version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" for my alma mater's Zoom Holiday party (2020 was a weird year, huh?). It was nice to have a bit of performance amidst such a strange year.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I'd encourage students or parents to think of how often they'd like to have lessons, what kinds of music they are interested in playing, and what their overall goals for lessons are. Are you interested in getting a better grasp of musical theory? Learning how to accompany a vocalist? Want to perform for your spouse? All of these various goals will influence the best way to build your skills via lessons.

Yes, I charge $25 per half hour. I am happy to give half-hour lessons ($25) or full-hour lessons ($50) depending on student/parent preference.
