About Emma

Hello! My name is Emma and I'm a Sophomore at Montana Technological University studying Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. I aim to graduate with a Bachelor of Science alongside two minors–one in Materials Science and the other in Mathematics. I consider myself to be a very energetic, patient, and kind individual, and am always ready to learn something new! Some of my hobbies include playing the flute and piccolo, playing with my three dogs and three cats, volunteering, creating art, and reading.

During the Fall of 2021, I will be taking Multivariable Calculus (Calculus 3). I have previously taken and excelled at College Calculus II, College Calculus I, AP Calculus AB, Trigonometry, Algebra II, Geometry, Algebra I, Pre-Algebra, and elementary math. I approach teaching with a patient and goal-oriented outlook, emphasizing the fact that both of us are continuing to learn; as such, we are in this together. I can promise to bring unique practice problems and resources for you to review each lesson that we have together.

I have been playing the flute for nine years and the piccolo for two and have been in a variety of bands and orchestras. I currently play in Montana Technological University's pep and concert bands and intend to audition for the Butte Symphony Orchestra this summer. In high school, I placed first chair in my school's audition band my Senior year. I was also handpicked by my director to play flute and piccolo for our school's musical. I find playing music to be incredibly peaceful and relaxing, as well as enjoyable, fun, and exciting! I would love to be able to pass on some of my knowledge to you so that we're able to have fun together! I do best with teaching beginners and intermediate-level students in a patient and goal-oriented environment.

I enjoy working with students because seeing someone go from not understanding a subject to mastering it makes me feel as though I have made a positive impact on those around me.

I got started teaching by volunteering at my local library for a reading buddies program. I taught second graders how to read, played educational games, and focused on reading comprehension. It was incredible! Since then, I have helped my sister with math homework, and after realizing I enjoyed teaching the subject, began to tutor it.

I have been tutoring for about a year now. I am a Sophomore at Montana Technological University majoring in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and minoring in Materials Science and Mathematics. I am currently taking Multivariable Calculus (Calculus 3) at my university. Math is a subject that builds on itself, so in order to take this class, I needed to have a solid understanding of previous math classes.

I have been playing the flute for nine years and the piccolo for two in a variety of band, orchestra, and choir settings.

About the lesson

When working with a new student I strive to develop a personal relationship so that teaching is much easier and the student feels more comfortable learning from me. I get to know them by asking questions about what they enjoy doing, how they study, what they hope to learn, and more. Then we set long-term goals. I will break these long-term goals down to create sessions that achieve parts of this goal.

I've worked with students who absolutely love and hate math. I have different tactics for teaching both. If the child is younger and doesn't like the subject, we can play games to try and make it more enjoyable. I try to offer incentives to older students to try and have them excel at learning. Oftentimes what makes a student dislike a subject is the complexity of it, so if I'm able to break things down and explain a topic better, it is very beneficial.

I would advise you to not only focus on the tutor's skill level but also on their personality and willingness to help someone learn.

2. Am I willing to put in some extra time completing tutoring homework, or am I looking for homework support?
3. Do I want to understand the subject, or am I just trying to get through the class?
