About Ethan

I take a personal approach to teaching for every one of my students. I've been taught by more math teachers than I've had math classes, so I know how much of a difference the style of teaching has on learning.

I have several years of both official and unofficial teaching experience from reading to high school mathematics. I am currently a senior at Ballard High School and am a lead member of the Ballard High School Tutoring program. I have received a score of 5 on the AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and Computer Science A exams, and I was awarded the AP Scholar with Distinction Award during my Junior year of high school. I also received the Commended Scholar Award from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and maintain a 4.0 unweighted GPA.

I’ve always loved teaching. After my younger cousins were born, I would jump at any opportunity to read to them, help them learn numbers, or practice the alphabet. In eighth grade, I had the opportunity to assist a first-grade class within my K-8 school; I was often so absorbed in reading aloud or helping a student that I usually stayed in the classroom long after I was expected to stay.

I'm currently a senior at Ballard High School in Seattle, and all of my classes are held virtually. Knowing firsthand the challenges of onilne learning, I decided to volunteer for the Ballard High School Virtual Tutoring program to help those who needed it the most. With more free time than I’ve ever had available, I took this opportunity to apply my love of teaching to something that I knew would be helpful to my peers.

Since then, I’ve been a regular member of the program, and I make sure I clear several hours each school day to be available for students. I look forward to every session, and each time I bring a student closer to understanding a topic, I become more excited about applying my love of teaching to as many communities as I can.

I have worked with students from first grade to high school in official contexts for the last 5 years. I am a lead member of my high school's virtual tutoring program which hosts personal online sessions for students within the school. I currently have a 95% rating from students I've taught.

About the lesson

With every person I teach, I make sure I understand their strengths and current understanding, and teach material that builds on that foundation. With some students, rules and guidlines make the most sense, so I teach them equations first, then explain the meaning behind them after. For students how are more visual learners, I build from graphical representations of concepts to numerical representations, then equations.

My advice would be to not feel obligated to stay with a single teacher. Math is a very funny subject because it can be taught in so many different ways, and most of the time there are only a few ways that actually stick with a student.

To me, tutoring is as much about teaching as it is about connecting with students. When I work with a student, I have to understand the ways their mind works in order to help them with a subject. A lack of connection or "not being a good fit" are a perfectly valid reasons to look for other teachers.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ask yourself, "Why do I want a tutor?" Not why your parents want you to have a tutor or why your teachers want you to have a tutor, but why you want to be tutored.

In order for tutoring to be a positive and helpful experience, I want my students to consider why they would like to be there. For some people, it might be learning specific information on a topic or developing habbits that will help in other classes. It might be a goal, like wanting to get better grades or take harder classes in the future. Whatever it is, I encourage students to reflect on their own reasons for being there so I can help them as best as I can.

I have a set hourly rate of $22 on weekdays from noon to 6:00 pm and $28/hour for weekends and later sessions.
