When meeting a new student I like to get a brief background from parents of why they believe their child needs a tutor. If possible being in contact with the child's teacher is also helpful. At that first meet with a student I like to get to know them and their interests outside of school. Creating a relationship with a student is important before getting right into work. Learning their likes, strengths, weaknesses and any other information about their personality is helpful when finding ways to inspire them. After that, finding their level of knowledge on their chosen area of need is important to know where they are staritng out and what our goals should be to move forward.
