About William

A lifelong student myself, I've had the good fortune of being able to work in the field of mathematics in both educational and research capacities. I am a student in Applied Mathematics who will be moving on to a master's program next year. During college I tutored at both a K-12 and college level through my university and through personal channels. I was a teacher's assistant in several college classes. I love working with people and seeing them succeed. Especially in a subject many have an aversion to. It's my belief that everyone has the capability to have very strong math skills, it's just a subject that needs to be developed more personally. Part of the problem is perpetuated by those who teach math who themselves do not have a complete grasp of the subject. So instead of teaching students how to understand math they teach a methodology for how to get an answer, which imparts no understanding. This combined with an impersonal experience can leave kids slipping through the cracks. I've experienced this personally. I've seen it in college. Kids come to me and they have no problem with the calculus they're being taught in class. But they're getting bad grades because their algebra or trigonometry skills are horrible. They weren't really given enough background to connect the dots to be able to utilize those skills and apply them to new material. Math isn't like other subjects that are pretty independent of one another. Like language, it's something that you have to build over time. You need a strong foundation to be able to fully grasp more challenging topics. So in short what I try to offer is an understanding of the big picture. There is no plug and chug here.

Qualifications: Bachelor's Applied Mathematics (VCU)

GPA: ~3.7

Research Assistant, VCU (Discrete Dynamical Systems)

-Conducted work with several professors on a Phd. level research project (publishing in progress)

Teacher's Assistant, VCU (Precalculus, Differential Calculus, Differential Equations)

I also have a firm background in Chemistry and Physics.

My favorite part is seeing people succeed in math. Math is so much fun! And it's such an integral part of life! A lot of people struggle with it, almost always due to a poor experience somewhere in their education. Math teachers sometimes fail to make it fun, to make it interesting. And they oftentimes fail to tailor math to specific educational needs. It's hard to do with the education system we've built in this country. But once kids start to get it, and they get those smiles. It's an awesome feeling. I like making people feel proud of themselves.

I started tutoring in college as a way to make additional income and build my resume. I found it to be very fun and rewarding (sometimes the best way to solidify your understanding of something is to teach it). I had other jobs, bartending for instance. But since Covid happened I've had to rely on tutoring while completing my applications for graduate school.

I have tutored before in college. I don't have any formal training in say pedagogy, but I have experience working with people from a multitude of backgrounds and levels of understanding. I've also had the pleasure of working with professors whose entire doctorate was specifically math education. And I would like to say I've absorbed their wealth of knowledge. I try to apply what they've taught me.

About the lesson

I like to personalize my tutoring to each student. I always begin by asking a bunch of questions to get a feel of what areas are strengths and what areas are weaknesses. From there depending on the age of the student I try to make math interesting. If you can make something interesting, then people will be more receptive to learning it.

I've worked with mostly college students, typically freshman, although some older. But now I've expanded to working with K-12 kids as well.

I would say that it's important to have some sort of an introduction first. The relationship between student and teacher is just as important as the level of expertise said teacher has. It's hard to learn from someone you don't really mesh with and vice versa. And so it should be the job of the teacher to make sure they can do that. And a lot of times you can feel out whether they can and if they're going to be a good fit with some sort of a meet and greet. This is about you, it's not about me. Don't be afraid to try a few people before you find someone that meets your needs/expectations.

Well the research I've been working on for about a year has just been submitted for publishing with SIAM. It was an amazing experience working with some of the smartest people I've ever met. We created a phenomenlogical model of neuronal activity in the brain of people experiencing MTLE seizures. I am immensely proud of that work. I hope that counts.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
First and foremost is understand what your goals are. What do you hope to achieve by doing this? Are you doing this for grades? Is this something you want general improvement for? Is what you're studying going to show up in later studies/life? If so then that's a specific type of long-term learning. Secondly, you should think about what your strengths and weaknesses are. Any good tutor is going to figure that out after working with you, but the more aware you are of it, the more ready you'll be to tackle it. And it'll help the process go more smoothely.
