About Phil

I'm an engineering student myself, friendly, and visually based with 10+ years of academic maths experience. From pictures, to drawings, to animations, I speciallize in finding ways for my students to understand concepts so that they gain an intuition about the mechanics of math. After understanding the mechanics, I solidify that knowledge by relating the concept to real-world situations so that they can begin to see the applications and importance of math.

I love teaching. Not only does it help me to fully grasp every nuance of these concepts, but some of my favorite moments are those times where students have that "aha!" realization about how something works. What keeps me interested in math is how you can apply it to everything in life. No matter where you look, you can always find math in the details.

One of my favorite things about college was going to study groups. I found out very quickly that I have a knack for teaching, and found myself to be very helpful to my classmates by helping them understand math and its many concepts. I liked it so much that I even transitioned into professional tutoring of my friends and other students from my campus. In the wake of COVID shutdowns, I've become very comfortable with the remote-teaching/learning process and actually find it easier for myself and my students to teach and learn from the comfort of our homes.

I have 10+ years of academic experience in math, and over 5 years of professional tutoring experience, focused mainly on calculus.

About the lesson

I always begin by introducing myself and explaining a little bit about my background in maths, and ask about the student's background and goals for their math and academic future in general. Then we can start the teaching process with their choice of walking through some school work or addressing specific questions they have. I use Zoom screenshare to see how the student thinks through concepts so that I can provide tips on how to better process the problem or information on how to better understand the problem, this is where I like to bring in pictures, drawings, and animations so that the student can fully understand the mechanics of their material.

I advertised my tutoring services through the campus, so the majority of my clients have been college students. Calculus has been the main focus of my students, but I have also taught statistics, economics, engineering, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Look for someone wants to do more than just step through problems. To really understand something you have to expand on it, relate it to something in your life, see applications of it, be able to play with it and watch the response. To have more impact than a free Youtube video, we teachers need to go a step further than walkthroughs.

Earlier this year I caught up with one of my students that I helped with Calculus 2 last year. This was her second run through college and she had been a life-long struggler with math but managed to get a B in her Calc 2 class, graduated in the fall of last year, and is now working as a businesswoman training and selling horses!
