About Sarah

I really focus on the child as an individual and work to figure out exactly what learning style is best for the child. I believe education should be individualized, even if that means more work and creativity on the teacher's part. I like to get to know the child and try to come up with ways to keep the child motivated and engaged.

To me, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a child understand a concept they were struggling with and the huge smile on their face when they finally experience that "ah-ha" moment of understanding.

I always loved school and learning and I have a passion for helping others. I spent multiple years babysitting and quickly realized that I love working with kids, (in fact, I love it so much I decided to pursue a career that spends its entirety helping children). I realized that I can easily combine these aspects that I love so much through tutoring and it was an instant match for me.

I graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA, spent 2 years at Moorpark Community College where I also maintained a 4.0, and am now attending California State University of Northridge (CSUN) studying to get a Bachelors' Degree in Communication Disorders and Sciences. I spent many hours tutoring in my neighborhood over the last few years, and I am now looking to expand. I am currently working at a preschool as a teacher assistant part-time, in addition to working as a teacher at a Hebrew School once a week in West Hills (a job I have held for the last 3 years).

About the lesson

Typically, I discuss with both the parent and the child (if they are old enough) what the major concerns are. After this, I like doing some type of assessment or evaluation to see where the child is at, identify strengths and weaknesses, and to identify how the child seems to learn best (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, example based, etc.). I am a strong believer that everyone learns differently and education is not a one-size-fits-all system. By going through this process, I get a broader picture of the child as a student and it allows me to formulate a game plan on how to best help this child.

I have worked with mostly elementary aged students and some early middle school (6th and 7th grade) students. Math skills and reading comprehension skills seem to be a common issue with past students. In addition, I have worked with students who are very intelligent, but their lack of organization and study skills, lack of confidence, or lack of motivation hinder their success. By building up these important aspects, I have seen big improvements.

I really think that the family, student, and tutor all should be able to work well together. Everyone needs to be able to work as a team and agree on the importance of doing what is best for the student. There are many qualified tutors who know the material, but they don't have the student's best interests at heart and don't work as a team with the parent on strategies that will help the student (outside of the 1 hour tutoring session).
