About Sofia

Sofia has years of experience working with students of all ages. She was a piano teacher for 2 years giving in home lessons to students from ages 4-15. Because she is classically trained and completed her Certificated of Merit in Piano, she is also able to tutor in music theory. In 2019, she taught 8th grade math and 6th-8th grade music with Generation Teach. She is bilingual in Spanish and able to tutor elementary to high school students who are taking Spanish. She earned her Seal of Biliteracy in 2017. She is well-known by students and adults as a reliable editor for any type of writing. Because of this, she has been trusted by many to proof-read, edit, and provide high quality feedback for numerous college essays. She tutored elementary school, middle school, and high school students in math, spanish, and english. As an Honor Roll student who performed well in IB and AP classes (as well as IB and AP tests) she has firsthand experience with advanced subjects and applies this to her tutoring to give her students the support they need.

I got started working with students when I was in high school. I was a piano for two years, a childcare assistant with YMCA assisting teachers with curriculum plans, and I tutored students in multiple subjects throughout high school. I taught 8th grade math and 6th-8th grade music in 2019 and I am currently studying to become a teacher.

I am a third year student attending University of California Santa Cruz, majoring in Literature and minoring in Education. I am on track to graduate after Fall 2020. I taught 8th grade math and 6th-8th grade music with Generation Teach in 2019. I have had years of experience working with students of all ages and tutoring in multiple subjects. These subjects include Math, English, Spanish, Writing, and Music Theory. I am studying to become a teacher because this is my passion and I am dedicated to helping all my students succeed.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, I start by establishing the goals they would like to achieve throughout our tutoring. This varies according to each student's needs. For example, a student who needs tutoring in math might have a goal to get an A on their math final, whereas a student who needs tutoring in writing might have a goal to revise and edit their college essays so they are in tip-top condition by the time college applications are due. We establish their goals and then we create a plan according to these goals. After establishing their plan, I put my effort into getting an understanding for the way my students learn best, keeping in mind that this differs per student. I apply this understanding to my tutoring by finding the best way to teach according to their method of learning.
