About Ashley

In my ten years of teaching and tutoring, one of the biggest challenges I see in students is that feeling they aren’t good at Math or Standardized Tests. Ability isn’t static. With targeted, approachable help your student can gain confidence and succeed.

The first time I tutored was in College. I worked as a Calculus Tutor and really enjoyed it. After earning my B.S. in Genetics with a minor in Math, I went on to earned my teaching certificate and began teaching middle and high school life science classes. I still loved math and missed working with it. After having my first child I decided to pursue a more flexible teaching position and started tutoring. I have found this so rewarding getting to work with students one-on-one and support them as they growth.

I have over a decade of experience teaching students. I started tutoring Calculus while at Iowa State University. I then taught in the classroom for 6 years where she worked with students with a variety of learning styles and differences. I have expereince working with both middle and high school students. I decided to leave the classroom to pursue my passion of working with students one-on-one to help each student succeed. I have been tutoring students privately for over 4 years.

About the lesson

When meeting with a student the first time, I set aside some time for us to review goals and expectations. I want to know what my student's struggles are and what has or hasn't worked in the past.

Prior to our first meeting I will send over a welcome packet with information about how to access and use the software I utilize for online tutoring. All of the software is free to use but some needs to be downloaded ahead of time.

I work with middle and high school students of all levels. I most typically work with I students below grade level looking to catch up or at grade level who are struggling for the first time. I have experience working with students with learning differences, ADHD, Autism, etc.

I would recommend having conversation either over the phone or preferably on Zoom before starting working together. This allows you the chance to get to know the personality of the tutor and communicate more easily your reasons for seeking tutoring. You want to find a tutor who is approachable and that your student feels comfortable asking questions to. I would also recommend being clear about what your goals are for tutoring so the lessons can be tailored to your needs.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Here are the questions I would ask before higher a tutor for online tutoring:

- What is the goal of tutoring? Are you filling in gaps of pervious material? Working through current class material?

- What is your availability for scheduling sessions? Is it the same every week or does it need to shift around sport schedules?

- Do I have the tools at home for online tutoring? (Computer, Internet, Webcam)

- What can I do at home to support the learning goals?

Details

I charge a discounted rate for our first session so that the student can make sure I am a good fit. My rate includes not only the face to face time, but also additional study materials if needed, access to me on Voxer for quick communication if questions arise between sessions and our study materials saved in our online whiteboard so they can refer back to them whenever they need to. My fee also includes easy scheduling with email reminders and easy invoicing. After the initial lesson I typically charge either by single session, 4 session packages or 8 session package (discounted by the number of sessions purchased).
