About Maguire
I am a sophomore majoring in mathematics and economics at Truman State University, and I have worked with students in various levels of math. I also work as a peer tutor for Truman State students at the TSU Center for Academic Excellence.
As a college student, I have the ability to offer my tutoring services, supported by years of experience, at flexible times and at modest, negotiable rates without compromising high quality. I always strive not only to foster students’ mastery of mathematical concepts, but more importantly to help them understand the purpose of their math education and to develop in them an eager want and passion for learning. To do this successfully is to pursue the goals of education both as a means to the attainment of other pedagogical benefits and as an enjoyable end in itself.
I am a math major who has worked with students at various elementary, middle, and high school levels before. I also tutor college students in Truman State University’s Center for Academic Excellence.

As long as time permits, I like to spend some time getting to know a new student before we work through mathematical concepts for a few reasons. First, different students learn in different ways. I seek to understand a student’s personality and learning habits so that I can effectively tailor my instruction to a particular student’s needs. Also, I find that trust is a necessary quality of relationships between tutors and students. A student must be able to open up to his or her tutor about topics on which he or she would like more specialized instruction. Building trust and rapport with a student before hitting the books is a great way to make the student comfortable with this fact.
With respect to instruction, I am a proponent of the Socratic Method for working through problems and concepts. Rarely, if ever, will I tell a student how to do a problem directly. To build a student’s educational independence, I will instead ask a student questions to lead him or her to the right process and the right answers.
