About Vaasavi

I am a training economist, or an applied mathematician who studies human behavior. I often joke that economists are just people who like storytelling through math--though I'm a little bit geekier, because I just love math!

I've been tutoring in mathematics for 10 years, on and off, and excel at the high school and upper collegiate levels. I specialize in illustrating the conceptual basis for mathematical exercises--allowing students to apply ideas rather than procedures and fall in love with the mathematics themselves.

I have experience working with students with learning disabilities, or students who just want to get better. I enjoy making exercises and making jokes--the key, of course, is that math should be fun above all else. THe rest, I've seen, will follow.

I am currently a student at Bocconi University, but graduated with honors from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, with a B.S. Economics and a specialization in Quantitative Social Sciences.

You can find me at (concealed information) or on linkedin at (concealed information)

I have done collegiate level work in advanced and theoretical mathematics. I have also taught courses at my university, both as a TA and as a full instructor of a credit-bearing course. I've researched in economics full time for three years, so I have tons of real-life examples that make mathematics tangible and accessible, which is especially important to me.

I always get to know the student's curriculum, just by looking at the syllabus and textbook, before we craft new lessons. I also try to get to understand what my students' aspirations are and help direct content in a way that is meaningful to them rather than pure theory. Since I'm into behavioral sciences, I tend to sprinkle in decision theory from time to time, just to make things fun and interesting.

- students with learning disabilities

- students behind recommended education level

- students from underrepresented backgrounds (I especially care about improving representation in STEM fields!)

You want a tutor who is willing to explain things three to four different ways, and who is willing to make time to answer your questions outside of the tutoring sessions. Mathematics especially is a slow and think-y subject. Sometimes you don't get things immediately and will have questions days afterwards. Make sure that whoever is working with you encourages that rather than avoids it, because it is an important muscle to build!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What level of mathematician do I want to be by the end of this? Can I expect more out of myself? What was one time that I actually enjoyed math, if ever?
