About Amanda

Hello! My name is Amanda Hughes. I am a mathematics educator with a passion for learning and teaching. Over the course of my career, I have had the pleasure of working with students of all ages and backgrounds.

I recieved my Professional Educator License in Illinois in 2016 with endorsements in Secondary Mathematics, Secondary Social Science-History, and Middle School. I taught Algebra I, Geometry, and a lab course at a diverse, urban high school. Besides teaching high school, I ran a middle school competitive mathematics team; developed and taught TAP, SAT, and ACT workshops, presented professional development sessions at a regional conference; and taught a math course for a summer bridge program at Northeastern Illinois University.

I have a B.A. in Mathematics and Secondary Education from Northeastern Illinois University and a B.A. in History from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. I am currenty working towards a M.S. in Mathematics for Teaching at DePaul Univerisity in Chicago. I am a member of several professional organizations including the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics, the Illinois Counil of Teachers of Mathematics, the Association for Women in Mathematics, and the Metropolitan Mathematics Club of Chicago.

I love working one-on-one with students. I believe that all students can do math at high levels, and I focus on inquiry-based lessons that help students understand why (not just how) math works. I have tutored students in mathematics for over ten years.

I have received the Association for Women in Mathematics Student Recognition Award, Mathematics Peer Leader Award, and the award for Outstanding Secondary Education Student at Northeastern Illinois University.
