About Sophia
I recently graduated with my BA in Political Science and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Western Washington Universtiy! I am very passionate about reading and learning new things and have a lot of study tips and tricks from my years as a student. I graduated with a GPA of 3.7. My areas of strength are writing and structuring research papers and coming up with fun and engaging ways to memorize things. I have been a volunteer researcher for an organization and am a current writing intern for The Borgen Project. My first job in high school was tutoring. I tutored two girls and was able to help raise their grades to As and Bs within a matter of a couple months. I also tutured a couple high school students while I was in college. My intention is not to be someone that works with students throughout their entire schooling, but rather to give them some tools so they can feel empowered to take on their school work on their own. As a tutor, my goal is to have you say you no longer need me after a few months because your child is ready to take on the pressure of school by themselves!
I love getting to share my passion for learning. I went through a time in high school where I was really unsure about why education was so important and felt like I was wasting a lot of my time. I ended up getting so frustrated with the public education system that I took a semester off and homeschooled myself through an online program. I was able to be outside more, spend more time doing hobbies and activies I loved, and decide what my schedule looked like. I had so much autonomy and had to teach myself everything, that it challenged me to build my time management skills and pushed me academically in ways I hadn't felt in a long time. When I went back to my public high school, I had rediscovered my love of learning. I recognized that attaining an education was about so much more than receiving the A or memorizing facts just to forget them days later. My goal is to share that passion and love of learning with my students. I want the kids I work with to be excited about the work they are doing, and feel like they are doing something that matters to them and the world.
I got started when I was approached by a teacher in high school that thought my writing stood out and asked if I would be interested in tutoring a younger student. I worked with that student for almost a year and was really successful with helping her raise her grades, confidence, and excitement about school.
My BA in Political Science trained me to write a perfect research paper. I consistently received some of the highest grades in my classes. I can break down the steps of writing to make a large research paper feel like something that is easy to tackle and excitin to write. I also am incredibly passionate about social justice and Political Science and so am good at getting students excited about the work they are doing. My education also makes me very good at finding the "why" in learning. I always try to find the reason why it is important to be learning about something, because I find when education is placed within the real world it is far more interesting and engaging.

I usually like to spend a couple sessions just getting to know the student so they are comfortable with me. We can complete the homework they have and I can see what their usual process is. It is really important to me that I get to know the student because everyone will have different ways of learning and remembering things. If I am familiar with the students likes and personality, I am much more likely to come up with tactics that are going to stick. After getting to know them, I will come up with a set of goals with them. Time management is something that is increasingly important as they get into higher grades and eventually university level work. Coming up with a time management plan is an integral first step in moving towards students being self sufficient.
The first student that I worked with was a girl that had a lot of difficulties with school and was definitely a circle in a system built for squares. She had struggled in school for a while and had a bit of a tumultuous relationship with her family. I figured out that she was very competitive and loved sports. So as part of my tutoring I would incorporate sports and competition into her homework. There was one day she could not concentrate at all, so I grabbed my tennis shoes from my car and I came up with some racing games outside. After excercising for about a half an hour she finished the worksheet we had been trying to work on for the hour before in under twenty minutes and we went on to complete the rest of her work within the hour.
Another girl I tutored would get very overwhelmed by the quantity of homework that she was assigned and would end up shutting down and having a lot of anxiety about not completing it. I related a lot to this and was able to help her break down the work she needed to do so it didn't seem quite so impossible. We would write down every assignment and then I would have her guess how long it would take her to complete it. Then, I would have her race against the time she had guessed and if she finished with time to spare she could come up with whatever prize she wanted to earn. Sometimes she would grab a couple pieces of chocolate and keep going on her homework, sometimes she would use the extra time to play a game with me or we would go for a walk outside. I also noticed that she really liked to draw and she was always doodling something. So when we studied for exams together I brought a whiteboard and would quiz her and have her draw a picture that corresponded with each answer.
Not everyone is going to be a good fit! Look for someone that you enjoy being around, because you are going to learn so much more if you are excited about what you are doing.
I recently came back from traveling, which was my graduation gift from my whole family. I got to go to Thailand, Cambodia and Japan. It was a breathtaking and humbling experience. For me, traveling always acts as a reminder that there are so many different ways to approach a problem or think about something. Being emersed in a different culture makes me think about all of the unique perspectives in this world. Although I may have come up with a way of living that works for me, keeping in mind that there is always a different perspective makes me a constant student. I am always looking for a deeper understanding in the world around me. I feel very lucky to have had that experience.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think that as long as students are putting in effort and not asking teachers to do the work for them, they should feel safe to ask any question. Even if the question is easy to respond to, it is the teacher's responsibility to demonstrate the process by which they found the answer rather than just giving the answer to the question. I would not want to say across the board that a question should not be asked, because if it is a genuine point of confusion it is always helpful to talk through the solution.

Sophia is incredibly patient. When I would get frustrated with a subject or a problem, she would always know how to get me thinking in the right direction. She never allowed me to just look things up or take easy ways out, she always made sure I had a deep understanding of things I learned, which made me do much better on tests! She was also always very nice and understanding, I didn’t ever feel stupid around her. I would very much recommend her to other students, she was really helpful for me in my most stressful years of high school, and I couldn’t have gotten through it without her!
Sophia helped me sooo much in high school. I still utilize the time-management tools she provided me for when I had an upcoming English paper and my productivity and critical-thinking skills have improved immensely from it. She was also useful for my history class as she helped me to understand which relevant themes to focus on in spite of the wide array of facts and figures.
She was super patient and kind! I felt like she really wanted to help me. If she didn't know the answer she would look it up before helping me. I thought that was awesome!
