About Deirdre
I am currently if completing my degree in Adolescent Social Studies education with a 5-6 extension! I use mindfulness techniques to bring history to life and for students to understand the time period by putting themselves in the time period. Mindfulness activities like visual imagery creates empathetic learners as students experience emotions that connect them to the topic.
I love working with students because school was not so easy for me. I had to try multiple techniques, study habits and reread a lot of material to figure out multiple ways to learn. This experience makes me very excited to differentiate instruction and personalize their experience.
I have Bachelors degree in Anthropolgy and currently I am completing my Masters in 5-12 Social Studies education.

Begin by asking the student what their goals are. Learn about the student's interests outside of school. Build rapport first, then personalize the lesson to accommodate the student's needs. Build on their strengths and continue to practice where they are struggling. Again, doing so by differentiating instruction for what the student needs.
Mistakes are necessary to learn. I want the student to become comfortable with messing up and in order for this to happen, I will have to build up their confidence. My advice would be to be as present as possible during our lessons and find some release in being able to mess up. That is how I know you are trying new things and going out of your comfortable zone. I tell my students now that just because they may not understand a topic right away, does not mean they can't eventually learn. I prioritize a growth mindset.
