About Andrew
Hi all, I'm Andrew Wilson, a 3rd year history major at Cal State Fullerton. I've been interested in history since I was really young and I'm very passionate about helping others understand the past and its importance to the modern day. I passed 9 AP tests in high school, including 5s in European and American history as well as US Government, Psychology, English Language and Environmental Science. Before I transfered to Cal State Fullerton, I earned an AA in liberal arts at Saddleback College. In the future, I am planning on teaching US history at a high school level and possibly transitioning into textbook writing. Right now I am looking to get a teaching start with one on one tutoring in subjects I am familar with, emphasizing secondary history but also science, english and math at elementary levels. In addition to my love of history, I love music, earl grey tea and listening to audiobooks. I was in marching band throughout highschool and marched with the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets in 2016.
My favorite thing in life is to open new doors to people, especially doors that may lead to new paths or ideas. I love creating mnemonic devices for my own study and sharing them to help others. I believe in setting measurable goals and tracking progress towards those goals, an approach that I believe has helped me greatly in life and my education. My plan is to use this approach to help my students use this same process to achieve their desired level of performance and for the approach itself to help them both in and out of academics to achieve their own goals.
As my profile states, I am a history major at Cal State Fullerton with intent to earn a secondary teaching credential after my bachelor's. I have only tutored for pay for a short time, however, I have been tutoring my friends in a casual way since I was a sophomore in high school. I also worked as a certified trainer at Raising Canes for almost a year.

My first step is always to see what the student (or parent) wishes to gain from the tutoring, whether that means passing a certain test, writing an essay, or just general improvement. After we decide on a goal, I will formulate a plan with measurable steps that can be worked through which will ideally lead to the stated goal.
I mostly tutored my own peers and sometimes younger students that I knew from marching band, so high schoolers. Once I earn my credential I plan on teaching high school history as well.
I think passion for history is the most important element in hiring someone to teach this subject. This subject has a high number of people who are qualified to teach it, but a smaller percentage of those have that real passion for history and not just a passing interest. I would also look for a teacher that is willing and excited to look at different interpretations of history. In my opinion, the purpose of history is to broaden a student's understanding of the world they live in, and a teacher that simply reads from the textbook will not achieve that purpose.
I recently took a trip to the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, and really enjoyed how it told a long and comprehensive story of the man's life. I did feel the presentation was a bit biased compared to other libraries I've been to; Nixon and Truman serve much more balanced views on their respective presidents.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A few to consider:
* Does the student need clarification or repetition? Some students just need a body to help them go over flash cards or study guides, while others may ask the tutor to provide missing knowledge or clarify things that another teacher may have phrased in a way that was confusing to the student.
* What is the student's learning style? Personally, I like to make a lot of comparisons to help me understand what I learn, but some students may be tactile learners or visual learners. There are some free online learning style tests, and while this system is imperfect it is a good starting point.
