About Ashelë

French has been an essential part of my life since I was ten years old!

I fell in love with the language and soon found myself the go-to classmate for help with French questions. My love continued into high school, during which I studied in Rennes, France for a year and lived with a French host family. Naturally, majoring in French and Francophone Studies was a logical step in college, during which I returned to France for a semester to study film at a Parisian university alongside native French speakers.

My services are rooted in my own fluency and understanding of the language, and are enhanced the self-reflective practice I engaged in when I was learning French. I know what's hard to grasp for the average student, and I have an aresenal at the ready to help students combat pitfalls.

I love seeing students' bright smiles once they realize they understand a topic well! Giving others the confidence to express themselves in one of the world's most beautiful languages is a reward in itself. :)

I have been tutoring since I was in high school, and grew up in a "teaching family". Both of my parents are educators in different spheres, so the skill was taught very early on. While at the University of Chicago, I also ran a successful tutoring organization for four years and helped hundreds of other tutors excel in their relationships with students.

I earned a degree in French and Francophone Studies from the University of Chicago, and spent two years taking classes with French professors and classmates.

About the lesson

I like to empower students to be confident in their expression of the French language. I use methods from my time at the University of Chicago, Université de Paris (formerly Paris Diderot), and School Year Abroad (SYA). My tutoring relationships begin with a short assessment, and then the student and I create a plan that will foster rapid improvement.

I have worked with a wide range of students; I find my methods to be most effective for students in high school and beyond. I always tailor my method to the student and their specific goals, strengths, and areas for improvement.

Whatever your decision for hiring a tutor for French, I would encourage you to pay attention to the accent of your tutor above all else.

There are many French accents out there, and they are all beautiful! In fact, the AP exam for French utilizes different accents in one of the comprehension sections.

However, you should be sure that the accent of your tutor isn't too far from the accent of your French teacher at school. This makes the connection between tutoring sessions and classwork much smoother.
