About Sarah
Hello! My name is Sarah May, and I tutor English (specifically, I have the most experience with essays and writing) as well as ESL (i.e. conversation, grammar concerns, writing and reading). I graduated from Shenandoah University in 2019 (B.A. in Music) and 2020 (M.S. in Performing Arts and Leadership Management). Currently, I work as a children's librarian in Front Royal, VA. I have over five years of experience in tutoring at SU's Writing Center, where I thoroughly enjoyed helping students reach their highest potential in essays, resumes, and other professional documents. I also tutored ESL and very much enjoy helping non-native speakers feel more comfortable with English, both written and spoken.
I am passionate about tutoring because I believe that sharing knowledge and helping another person learn is truly a great experience. In my work in the ESL community, I have found special satisfaction in helping others learn that English is not intimidating, and that it can be fun. When I help students write essays, I also love knowing that I am helping, but I am able to make the student think for themselves and realize that they know much more than he/she thought.
If you are interested in contacting me, my email is probably the best way to do so! I look forward to helping out!
My first experience with teaching was during my freshman year at Shenandoah University when I was recruited by one of my English professors to be a tutor. I have held the same job since then and have shaped my technique based on experiences here, as well as at a few other private tutoring sessions.
I am a junior at Shenandoah University. My major is in music and my minor is in English. I intend to pursue ESL after graduation.
I currently work as a tutor at Shenandoah University's Writing Center.

If the student is working on an essay, I start by having them explain the assignment (a rubric, for example, is great to have). After that, I ask them if they have any specific concerns about the assignment, and I make sure to focus on whatever the student feels that they are struggling with. Typically, I try to get through the student's entire essay (along with citations), and myself and student work through any problems that are found.
When I conduct an ESL session, the process is the same for an essay. However, conversations are different. I typically start by asking direct questions to the student so that I can get to know the student better. Through my questions and just through talking to the student, I try to make him/her feel more comfortable in the situation, and usually this results in an organic conversation.

-ESL students (college-aged and higher, but I am willing to work with just about anyone who is learning English as a second language)
I suggest hiring someone who is able to make you feel comfortable while still giving you the information and expertise that you need. This person should not make you feel uncomfortable, but should be able to point out your mistakes and help you through them without patronizing you.
During the fall semester of 2017, I was able to organize grouup ESL sessions that were very successful and resulted in new friendships being made among the students (I made some friends this way too). I was able to contact some students who were foreign but outside of the ESL program and invited them to participate in the sessions, which resulted in a very diverse variety of people. I am hoping to continue these sessions.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
"Can you fix my paper?"
Technically, I can! However, I also want to help you improve on long-term rather than short-term. A good writing tutor will help you learn how to stop making mistakes rather than fixing them without explanation.

I am willing to negotiate and am flexible, but I typically charge around 30-35$ per hour. Depending on the level of the student (high school vs. college vs. grad school) and if he/she is an ESL student or not is what makes the price negotiable. I am more than happy to discuss pricing!
