About Avery

I have years of experience surrounded by children as someone who grew up in the daycare-home setting. After beginning work at a daycare center and realizing the differences in children's developmental process, I began thinking of working with children as an adult. I am a licensed daycare assistant provider and substitute in my county. This has provided me with hours of trainings and certificates such as: CPR/First Aid, Child Restraint Systems, Grief and Trauma in Children, Child Development, and more. Currently, I am working through my internship at an elementary school. This has provided me with experience working with children struggling through social, emotional, learning, and behavioral skills.

About the lesson

When engaging with a student for the first time, I begin by gaining information from themselves, as well as their parent/guardian, about what their specific needs are academically. From there, I work with my student to complete a learning styles assessment. This helps me gain a better idea of how my student learns best. Next, a SMART goal sheet is completed with my student based on their specific strengths, needs, and goals. I believe it is important for students to see their goals in front of them everyday and work towards these goals. Lastly, depending on what the student and parent/guardian feels needs to be worked on, I will conduct a short assessment including that subject. This provides me insight on where my student is currently sitting academically.

My current students range from ages 7-15 years old. Some of the areas and subjects that my current students are working on improving are math, social studies, language arts, reading, writing, note takinging skills, and test taking strategies.

As a student, I feel it is best to write down what specifically you need help with and what you want your tutor to be like before you begin looking for one. This is helpful in eliminating your choices for a tutor that could end up being the wrong fit for you. A great question to ask yourself is, "If I were a tutor, what would I want to provide for my students?"

Just last week, my student expressed to me that they had felt discouraged by school assignmentz and too stressed to complete her work. By the end of our session, my student was smiling and told me how thankful she was that her mother signed her up for tutoring!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before a student talks to their tutor about their academic needs, they should consider a variety of things. Discussing "strengths and weaknesses" with teachers and parents/guardians and receiving thought from them can be helpful. Creating a detailed list of what specifically you need help with is another great option. If a student is struggling in the subject "Social Studies," try breaking that broad subject down and narrow it by explaining your struggles in World War I, World War II, Civil War, Geography, etc.
