About Laura

I have twelve years of experience as a high school English teacher and writing tutor. I have a Master's degree in Teaching Writing & Literature from George Mason University and am certified as an adjunt professor of composition. Most of my experience has been teaching seniors, and I have vast experience with the college application & essay process.

I love helping students find their voices and express themselves in writing. I also love giving them creative strategies to navigate complex texts and guiding them to appreciate the power of literature & storytelling. Ultimately, English is about communicating in a clear and compelling way, which is one of the most essential parts of being human.

I began my teaching career in 2008 and have spent the past twelve years at three different public high schools in northern Virginia & Maryland.

I graduated magna cum laude from The College of William & Mary with a dual degree in English & Secondary Education, and I received my Master's degree in Teaching Writing & Literature from George Mason University. I have twelve years of experience teaching at public high schools in northern Virginia & Maryland, I am certified as an adjunct professor of composition, and I spent several years working as a teacher-consultant for The National Writing Project.

About the lesson

When I meet new students, my first step is always to learn about who they are as readers, writers, & thinkers. Often, this conversation might start with a survey about their past experiences in English classes - when they've felt successful, where they've faced obstacles, and what goals they have for themselves moving forward. I also like to give a baseline diagnostic to assess their skills - typically a writing prompt or a short passage and a set of analysis questions. Then, we would work together to establish measurable, attainable goals and create a timeline that feels manageable for the student to achieve them, using calendars and other digital tools to track their progress.

I've worked with all grades & levels of high school students. Most of my experience has been with English 11 (American Literature) and with English 12, both general-level and a Dual Enrollment college compositon course. I also have experience working with ELL students and students with IEPs.
