About Julie

I am a college graduate with a degree in Literature pursuing a Masters degree in Literature, and a lifelong lover of reading and writing. I’ve presented a paper at a small conference as well as received top marks in all English and Literature courses I took at the college level. I have a wide range of experience as far as novels, writing, and theory are concerned and I’m always thrilled to dive into it and to dive into something new.

I’ve worked as a substitute teacher as well as a preschool/summer school teacher, and was a peer editor in college, so I have a variety of experiences to back my expertise.

I have a degree in Literature from Eastern Michigan University, I received high marks from all my undergraduate professors regarding my writing and my grasp of literature and theory, and I have presented a paper in front of an academic audience for review. Since graduating in 2017, I have worked in classrooms in the public school system as well as in the private sector as a preschool/summer school teacher, with a variety of students at different age and experience levels.

About the lesson

I think the most important part of working with someone new is getting an idea of the goals they want to achieve, or setting some achievable ones that we can focus and hone in on to work toward together - the more specific the better (I.e. - I would like to understand the point of Romeo and Juliet and what Shakespeare was even talking about).

Look for someone who cares about what you want to know and think, not just what they think the book or the story is about. Literature and writing are subjective and that’s okay - there doesn’t always have to be a right answer and sometimes it’s more important to disagree, with text based reasons, than it is to agree just because you think someone is right.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think it’s very important for students to think about what they want to get out of a given subject, more so than what they are required to achieve per the education system. Learning happens when you are involved in creating and forming your own experience and that’s very important to the understanding and enjoyment of literature (as well as other subjects).
