About Tonianne

I endeavor to tailor make my study plans for each student. I get to know my students, learn about their interests and schedules so that we can come up with a strategy that works them. Each student is unique, and I work hard to make my tutoring plans as unique as each student.

I love seeing my student succeed. Watching students grow as scholars and find an appreciation for the subject we are covering is so rewarding, and it makes all the hard work worth it.

I started tutoring when I was 14 after scoring a perfect score in the high school entrance exams I took. I have been teaching English since I graduated with my MFA in 2015.

I have a MFA in Creative Writing from The New School and will have a MA in English Literature in May 2020 from the University of Maryland College Park. I am currently working on my certification for teaching English as a second language and have taught for Rosetta Stone for the past year. I have been a lecturer in writing at the college level (first at CUNY Baruch and now at UMD) for the past 5 years.

About the lesson

I learn about their strengths and weakness by talking to them and doing a preliminary test based on the subject matter. Once I get that information, I talk to the student about their goals and schedule so we can work together to create a studying and tutoring plan that works for them. It's important that they are involved in the process because it creates a sense of responsibility: they agreed to what we designed together and know they have to stick to it. This also helps the student see that I am not there to penalize them but to help them grow as students.

All kinds, from ages 6-45.

One of my students who came to me from another tutor had lost all faith in himself when applying to college. I helped him revise his essays and prepare for interviews. He called me to tell me he got into University of Michigan's honors program, UMD's honors program, UVA's honors program, and Georgetown. We are still waiting to hear from a few more. But I am immensely proud of him.
