About Shruthi

Hi there! My name is Shruthi Mekala, and I am currently a sophomore at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I am majoring in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences, and I am on the pre-medical track. I have taken all sorts of different classes throughout my educational journey, and I have plenty of informal experience tutoring and advising others. I love to learn, and enjoy helping people based on my past experiences, and I have plenty of knowledge to share, from what to write about in college essays, or how to do well in high school chemistry class. I have been a tutor for a couple of months now, and I think that all students respond to my calm, patient attitude. With plenty of academic tutoring and advice on study tips and more, I believe that any student tutored by me will leave with a greater appreciation for their desired subject of improvement, and more tools in their kit that they can utilize throughout their educational journey.

I enjoy teaching others about subjects that I've mastered over time. I think one of the most rewarding parts of education is that you can take your knowledge and share it. As a student two years past the college admissions cycle, and a year and a half before the medical school cycle, I've gained so much experience both inside and out of the classroom, and to share that with someone through tutoring is amazing. It's incredible to know that maybe someone is benefitting from my past experiences, or knowledge gained by hindsight.

About the lesson

My typical process starts by getting to know the student a bit. I have them tell me about the subject they want some extra help in, how they feel about the class, how they're doing, and what they like/dislike about the class. Then, I ask them to reflect a bit, and think about some goals and expectations that they have for us to accomplish together. I ask them about what type of learner they think they are, their study habits, that kind of information. But after that, I think the best thing to do is jump right into the material. I have them talk me through a problem, or system, to get a sense of their understanding and how they process information. From there, I can start tutoring, having gained the proper context to best help my student.

I would say to find someone that you would feel comfortable talking to! It's really scary at first to have someone looking over your shoulder at your work, so make sure you find a teacher that makes you feel comfortable when you need to make mistakes, ask silly questions, or even go to for important advice.
