About Alun
I had worked as a writer and editor since college and pursued teaching first at the community college level and soon thereafter at an independent school.
I have been a secondary school educator for 20 years. I currently serve as the Upper School English Department Chair at Dexter Southfield in Brookline, MA.

When I work with a new student, we discuss their interests in English and their strengths as a reader and writer. We then look at potential areas of improvement and map out the best approach to achieve those concrete goals.
I have worked in both the independent school and public school arenas. I have taughts students of all ages and from many different economic, social, and cultural backgrounds.
I encourage students looking to hire an English tutor to find someone that they find to be supportive, skilled, and enthusiastic. Being a good listener is also a key trait of a good tutor; I tell students to work with adults with whom they can develop a trusting relationship.
My current school participates in Poetry Out Loud, which is a national organization that promotes poetry as a vital part of the experience of young people. I loved seeing and hearing all of my students--some with little previous interest in poetry--reciting poems that were meaningful to them from memory.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Who are you as a reader, and who are you as a writer? Once we have thought about those questions, consider whom you want to become as a reader and writer. Do you want to improve your reading comprehension? Do you wish to improve your test-taking ability? Do you need to learn the ins and outs of a five-paragraph essay? Know what you want first!
