About Michael

Prior to enlisting as an Air Traffic Controller in the United States Navy, I attended Virginia Commonwealth University as an English major with a concentration in creative writing where I presented two argumentative essays at local conferences and was selected as an undergraduate teaching assistant for two UNIV writing courses. I earned my B.B.A. from American Military University in 2020. I have held four instructor positions in the Navy relating to air traffic control. My tutoring experience primarily focuses on college level general education courses and the argumentative research process, but could easily be adapted to middle school and high school level coursework.

I started during my undergraduate degree when I was selected to be an undergraduate teaching assistant. But it wasn't until the Navy that I started realizing my passion for it.

My day to day job is an air-traffic controller. I hold instructor ratings on 4 positions. To receive those, one has to take annual courses on various learning and evaluation styles. Additionally, during my undergaduate degree, I was selected to be an undergraduate teaching assistant for two different writing courses. During this time I learned to deal with both large group students and one on one sessions.

About the lesson

Prior to engaging a lesson, I like to have an informal conversation about their general interests to establish a relationship. Then, I like to gauge their various learning style through questioning about their interests. I find tutoring to be most effective when there is a better understanding of both the instructor and the student.

As a UTA, I worked with over 40 freshman college students in a classroom setting. In the navy, I have worked with more than 20 first and second year students taking online courses.

I would encourage students looking too hire a teacher to take the time to identify their learning style and then find a teacher that supports that.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Learning is an ongoing process that never stops. I encourage all students and profesionals to think about the 5 W's and then communicate any portion they cannot figure out or articulate as a question to their mentor or educator.

As an educator, I believe it is my job to help you find the answer to that by showing them the "how".
