About Mackenzie

My name is Mackenzie Ford and I am a veteran tutor (three years with Peninsula Bridge, and five years running my own private tutoring business for grades 1-8). I am a freshman at Brown University majoring in French, Spanish, and English, although my true passion is teaching! I have been a teacher and a mentor for as long as I can remember.

In running my own private tutoring business, I have designed and implemented a curriculum for three students weekly in self-run, private, hour-long sessions. Through the Peninsula Bridge Education Program, I created and taught English, Spanish, and Math curricula for summer academic enrichment. I spent seven hours a day with the students, teaching them At Siena Youth Center, I taught weekly classes of fifteen students and was eventually selected to teach four students from underserved districts in private sessions to empower them for success in college.

Last summer, I was awarded a job as a Teacher’s Assistant at the Peninsula Bridge summer program which gave me the opportunity to design and lead classes for fifth to eighth-grade students in underserved districts in English, Spanish, and Math. Working for Peninsula Bridge for 40 hours a week gave me experience with curriculum design, as well as a lesson in patience. When the program ended, the organization kept me on as a private tutor and Teacher’s Aide through the rest of the year. I worked every week with three bilingual students for an hour each, collaborating with teachers to design lesson plans and put those lessons into action. I witnessed the tangible effect of my work in the students’ improved academic skills and in their growing confidence, even if that meant explaining each math problem first in Spanish, then English, and then Spanish again.

About the lesson

I start with an assessment session, where I discuss the students' and parents' goals, and assess the student's current level. Then, with those goals in mind, I formulate a plan to help the students achieve academic success in a way that makes them feel confident in their own skills.
