About Sharon

We help students be successful through personalized instruction, goal setting, organization, and study skills. I have 35 years of teaching and counseling experience primarily on the middle school level. I am certified to teach English in grades 6-12 in both Michigan and Illinois. I also have a masters degree in Guidance and Counseling and have 21 years experience in that area. I have taken graduate level courses 60 credit hours over the Masters degree level. My experience is also in teaching reading phonics to elementary students using the Orten-Gillinham method and multisensory techniques.

I love working with students and helping them learn and seeing their progress.

My mother and several aunts and cousins were teachers so I grew up with the profession. I loved student teaching and realized it was for me. I was honored and blessed to have a long and wonderful career. I am now retired and looking to continue helping students.

I am a certified teacher and guidance counselor in both Michigan and Illinois. I have a bachelors degree in English and Psychology from Kalamazoo College and a masters degree in Counseling and Guidance from Western Michigan University. I also have 30 hours of training with SLD Read in the Orten-Gillingham program for teaching phonics in reading to beginning elementary readers. I have over 50 hours tutoring experience in that program with 1st and 2nd graders.

About the lesson

I like to get to know my student first and to establish a relationship. I need to know what the goals that both the student and parent have. Then we will develop a plan to accomplish the goals.

I have worked with all types of students with many different challenges as well as students with advanced ability. I co-taught with a special education teacher classes with regular ed and special educations students with learning disabilities, emotional problems, and behavioral problems.

I love working with my dog. She is a 4 year old Maltipoo, and we do agility, obedience, therapy dog work, and service dog training. We went to a beginning agility trial a few months ago, and it was great fun to run the course with her.
