About Andy

I've been supporting students in secondary and postsecondary education since earning my Ed.M. from Harvard Uninversity in 1994. I have a particular interest and expertise in working with students whose learning is affected by a disability and in college admissions. I'll help minimize the stress and improve the results. Learning has always fascinated me. I find it fulfilling to empower students and families to make decisions that will reap benefits for the entire adult life.

B.A. with Honors in English Literature, Columbia University.

Ed. M. in Secondary Education pedagogy, Harvard University.

Additional coursework in disability issues in higher education, Boston College, and rehabilitation counseling, Boston University.

10+ years as a disability services administrator in higher education.

About the lesson

Each student is unique, but in general I want the students with whom I work to become more impowered and self-sufficient, not reliant on me. Current research shows a link between emotions and learning outcomes, so I do more than most tutors to reshape how students feel about their learning. I also help students learn to use work already graded to refine approaches on subsequent assignments and tests. I specialize in students with learning disabilities, ADHD, Aspberger's and anxiety or depression.

Find someone patient, flexibile and fun. If the student isn't relaxed while meeting with the teacher, it becomes very hard to make sizable gains. If forced to choose, opt for the tutor with not-quite-perfect content knowledge over one with not-quite-perfect intangibles (although I bring both).

Recently I attended a training in San Francisco held by Landmark College, a college specializing in working with students who have learning differences. Among many great take-aways I was struck by the impact emotions have on cognition, which leads me to my belief that time spent reprogramming students how to feel about their school work is just as important as working on course content.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Goal setting is crucial. Students should understand their goals in tangible ways and not just as a reflection of parental ideals.
