About Laura

I work in educational environment as a teacher to students ages 11 to 18 concentrating in Social Studies and English Language Arts. I have previously taught preparation for 7th and 8th grade NYS ELA test and I am currently teaching to prepare for the NYS U. S. History and Government Regents. My full-time job is teaching at an admission-in high school in Rockaway Park associated with the NYCDOE. I work in an ICT setting and work with students of all ages, ability levels, and cultural backgrounds. My goal is to provide homework help or test preparation as necessary. I love to be around children and learn from them every day. I'll also serve as a friend and learning buddy for your student.

Students are at a really special age when they are in middle school and high school. They begin to prepare for the success of their future. I have seen many students exceed farther then they have ever dreamed because of the hard work they put into their studies at this age. However, this age is incredibly fragile. If a student falls behind, it could be detrimental to their success later on in life. Therefore, I love to provide tutoring services for students of this age to tackle those tough state tests, introduce more advanced test-taking strategies, and help them find what they truly love about learning through individualized support.

About the lesson

Working with a new student, just like beginning a new school year, is all about creating a bond and trust between teacher and student. I like to begin tutoring by getting to know what the student likes, what they dislike, what they like to do outside of school, and their comfort level with the specific subject or test that we are going to focus on. Then, I allow the student to take a short practice test that presents a miniature version of how an exam for that subject typically would be structured. This usually includes multiple choice questions and a short reading passage for English. This would include multiple choice questions and documents for Social Studies. This would allow me to see what the student currently does when taking an exam without any guidance. Utilizing that knowledge of how the student takes the exam, the strategies they use, and the process by which they answer the questions, I create an individualizaed plan of focus for each student that will change each week to highlight their strengths and weaknesses.
