About Isabella

Ako Tutoring is run by Bella Medaris, a student at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. She is a rising senior majoring in Neurobiology, minoring in Psycholog, and has aspirations to become a doctor. She has studied many topics in depth including psychology, biology, chemistry, US history, literature, writing, Spanish among others. Ako Tutoring aims to help students not only achieve their goals, but have fun learning along the way.

I developed my love for teaching by doing something called Language in Motion. Language in Motion is a program run by my College in which students get to go to K-12th grade classrooms and teach students about a language or culture that they might have never been exposed to before. I teach students about Māori, the indigenous population of New Zealand, because I had the opportunity to study abroad and experience the culture and language myself. The joy on the students' faces when learning about a culture so different from their own is what motivated me to begin tutoring.

I am a high school graduate, and I will be graduating from Juniata College in May 2021 with a degree in Neuroscience with a minor in Psychology. After I graduate, I plan on taking a gap year to save money and gain experience in the medical field before I go to medical school. I have had many childcare positions during my time in high school and college. I love being a student and helping other students achieve their goals.

About the lesson

Typically, I would assess the situation holistically, by looking at what the student is studying, what their study habits typically are, which areas they are having the most difficulty with, and where they are at relative to where they would like to be (in terms of grades). After this, I would ask the student where they feel they need the most help, and why they think they are struggling with the material. After this, I would look at the curriculum, and come up with a comprehensive study plan that the student can work through with me. Every time we'd meet, we would follow this plan, adjusting it as necessary.

I have worked with students in preschool all the way through 12th grade. I have experience teaching students with special needs, specifically ADHD.

Make sure that the teacher you are hiring is passionate about what they do and what they teach. In my experience, the quality of the lesson is only as good as the enthusiasm of the person teaching it. If the teacher is interested in what they are teaching, they will show that learning whatever they are teaching is fun and interesting too.

During my midsemester break this year, I was able to travel with my lacrosse team to Clearwater, Florida to participate in a tournament and volunteer to help the city. The weather was great and it was fun to spend time at the beach with my teammates.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Make sure that you are being honest! The number one thing that teachers want to do is help you. You don't have to be embarrassed about anything you may be struggling with. Some subjects come easier to certain people, and everyone is good at something. Why not have someone who is good at a subject you struggle with help you out so that you'll get better at it too?

My standard pricing system is as follows:

Elementary School Tutoring: $45/hour

Middle School Tutoring: $50/hour

High School Tutoring: $55/hour

AP or College Level Tutoring $60/hour

Pricing depends on difficulty of the material and how many hours a week are needed. Prices are negotiable.
