About Liz

I have taught acting since 2011 in three different countries to students ages 6 to 17. I have both my BA and MA in Theater and Classical Theatre respectively. I trained at the Los Angeles Groundlings School of Improv and have worked with students in both classroom settings and independently.

I have also taught in as a primary educator at two highly respected elementary schools in Los Angeles. I have tutored for students up to 6th grade and worked as a Singapore Math specialist as well.

My goal is to provide students with the tools to find confidence in their own work and see the path towards accomplishing their goals through hard work and perserverance. Every student has the capacity to accomplish their goals, it's my job to help them see that.

I have been passionate about teaching since I was quite young. I began tutoring when I was still in high school and carried on while in college.

I chose to do this because watching the students I worked with start on one side of a wall, push themselves to climb over it, and end up on the other side, is the height of poetry. When we are supported by someone who believes in us, we are capable of infinite things. I love the work that I do because seeing someone realize that they can acheive what they once viewed as insurmountable is invaluable.

I come from a long line of teachers; my mother and father are both teachers; my grandparents were also teachers; my brother is a teacher. Teaching is in my bones. There were times when it seemed as though my path might be leading towards something else, but it always came back to teaching.

I suppose my first experience teaching was while I was in elementary school. In 4th grade, I completed the math curriculum ahead of my grade. As such, the principal asked that I return to the 1st/2nd grade classroom and assist the teacher during math. An opportunity that made me feel truly valuable, and a feeling I have never wanted to part with since.

I have taught in Elementary classrooms, grades K-6; been trained in Singapore Math; led the homework room at a K-6 elementary school; taught drama to grades K-12 in three separate countries; hold CBEST certificate.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, the first step we take is to figure out where the student's strengths are. In determining where the student is most confident, we are then able to formulate a plan of action to tackle the areas where the student feels less confident. I contend that focusing on a student's weaknesses only enhances their doubt in their capabilities.

It is also essential at this stage to build a relationship of trust between tutor and student. If a student doesn't feel comfortable coming to their teacher with an insecurity in their learning, they shut themselves off from being able to gain that knowledge in an enthusiastic way.

Once we've determined together what the student wants to acheive, the two of us can decide what is driving them towards those goals. Through these steps we're better able to find success.

I have worked with children that are only slightly behind the academic curve for their grade. I have worked with students who thought they were too far behind to catch up. I have worked with students who hate their subjects. I have worked with students with behavioral conditions. I have worked with students who are extremely advanced for their grade. Suffice it to say, my experience with students has been varried.

Be honest about what you want and about what you feel is holding you back. With that information, you'll be armed with the tools to overcome whatever obstacles you've run into.

One of my students recently brought home a math test where they scored an 87%. The previous test they took received a 53%. This particular student, who was on the spectrum, was proud of the progress that he had made. Even better than that, he was confident that on the next test he would do even better. I have no doubts that he will.

My base rate is $75 for assistance with existing school and homework.

If additional tutor-provided pre-prepared materials are requested my rate increases an additional $25.

If multiple students are being tutored simultainiously, my rate increases an additional $40.

If you are a low-income family, rates can be adjusted based on your income.
