About Brendan

I have an extensive background as a teaching artist and teacher trainer in New York City public schools. For the last decade I have taught arts integrated programming in English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies classrooms. I have managed and directed programs that use creative writing and storytelling to develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. In addition to my career in education, I also have a professional background in theater and playwriting that informs my teaching style. I am also a multi-instrumentalist and visual artist in my down time.

I began teaching Introduction to Shakespeare courses when I was 18 and worked steadily at summer camps and youth programs as a student. After completing my MA in Theater Education, I began working extensively in public schools creating and facilitating arts integrated curriculum in multiple subject areas and developing programming for after school in playwriting, creative writing, theater, and storytelling. While I have never fully stopped teaching, I began working as a teacher trainer and program manager in the non profit sector.

About the lesson

I believe it is very important to get to know students before any major steps in instruction can truly start. My work is firmly rooted in inquiry-based, culturally responsive, and student centered instruction. So I often start my work with fun, engaging, low stakes activities that allow us to get to know each other and have some fun with the content and subjects we will be working on together. This can take the shape of visual thinking strategy style warm ups, creative writing prompts, drawing exercises as literary character sketches, or dialogue writing. But once this foundation is established, we can start to set goals and agendas for academic growth and development that is focused on students strengths and creativity.
