About Ryan

My name is Ryan and I have a wide variety of prior experiences in teaching and tutoring with young people. I have five years of experience teaching summer reading classes for students ages K-12, in which I helped students hone their skills in comprehension, textbook reading, fluency, beginning phonics, essay-writing, long-word decoding, and vocabulary enhancement. I also have five years of experience in individual tutoring for ACT/SAT test prep, reading (K-12), writing (K-12), world and U. S. history (high school and college), and writing skills (K-12). I enjoy working with students of all age levels and am excited to begin working with you.

During the school year, I work as a Social Studies Teacher at a local high school in Upstate New York. In my four years of teaching, I have taught a wide variety of courses, including Global History 9 (ancient/medieval), Global History II (modern), The American Civil War, Economics, U. S. History (both 8th and 11th Grade), and a World Today/Current Events elective.

Additionally, I have five years of tutoring experience in English/Social Studies topics, with a particular specialty in SAT Reading/Writing, Essay Editing (for high school/college students), AP World and AP U. S. History, and Writing/Editing support for adult learners. This teaching experience has taught me how to meet the needs of a wide variety of student learners, including gifted, ENL, and special education students, as a social studies teacher. I completed my teaching certification program at the University of Buffalo, which included 130 classroom contact hours and four months of student teaching in the Hamburg and Buffalo School Districts. Before student teaching, I spent several years studying history at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I have always been a lifelong lover of history, and so I moved to Washington, DC for college to immerse myself in living history every single day. It was an amazing experience, and certainly helped to solidify my interest in teaching social studies.

After college, I worked for two years as a Youth Programs Leader in Flemington, NJ. There I realized that I not only love my content area, but also enjoy working with teenagers. I then completed my Master of Arts in History at Binghamton University, but soon realized that I wanted to teach full-time rather than pursue a career in academia. I realized that the most important aspect of my work was teaching and making meaningful connections between students and history, so I decided to pursue a career as a high-school social studies/reading teacher.

My passion for teaching and working with young people, strong content knowledge, and hard work ethic are what drive me as an educator. I will always give 100% effort to ensure that my students' learning goals are met, tailoring my lessons to individual students' needs, goals, and learning styles. I commit to provide excellent tutoring service and working with you to achieve the academic goals you aim to meet.
