About Damla

Hi! I'm Damla, an experienced English tutor with an international background (I can also help with university/boarding school + scholarship applications)

- I am currently a student at Duke University in the U.S. and am studying a self-directed degree focused on Linguistics and Educational Philosophy.

- My high school years were spent in an elite boarding school (The Lawrenceville School) near Princeton University, NJ, U.S.

- I scored 800/800 in the English and Writing sections of the SAT, and 5/5 in both AP English Language and AP English Literature. I also graduated into the oldest Academic Honors Society in the United States (Phi Beta Kappa).

- I have experience living/studying/working in 9 cities on 3 continents (I have received various academic awards in the British, International, and American education systems).

- I am also an online English tutor and mentor for shepherd communities in rural Turkey + I do accent coaching with British and American actors.

- I have given a TEDx Talk in the U.S. on the future of languages.

- I am deeply knowledgable about the scholarship system for international students applying to schools in Europe, the U.S., and Canada, so I can help with writing application essays to Oxford University, the Ivy League, and many other institutions.

- I have experience with 10 languages (my Spanish journey began with online tutoring, and I later won a respected Spanish translation prize while competing against native speakers in the U.S.).

- I have tutored native and non-native elementary to high school students with grammar, English history, creative writing, etc. My favorite was a read-together program where I taught children in storybook-making workshops.

So much of it is exciting! For me, the chance to raise my students' confidence in their language abilities and general knowledge is the best part of this work.

About the lesson

My specialty is in exposing students to general cultural kowledge in addition to more specialized study in English. I love to discuss books, films, historical figures, and my international perspective with my students. It's always a casual, welcoming, and fun environment!

I have worked with all levels of students, starting from elementary school students with native and non-native English abilities, to high-schoolers needing help with grammar or literature analysis.
