About Meredith

I have extensive experience in writing--from college essays to honors theses to lab reports to job applications--I have written it all. My varied experiences and interdisciplinary background put me in a great position to coach you through any writing challenge.

I am currently a JD candidate at Emory University School of Law. Before coming to law school, I graduated with Honors from the Plan II Honors liberal arts program at the University of Texas at Austin. While earning my B.A. in Plan II, I concurrently earned a B.S. in Architectural Engineering honors, which has given me a broad perspective on writing methods and analytical thinking. After graduation, I spent a few years working in the construction industry and immigration law before coming to law school.

Over the years I've written thousands of pages and received feedback from people in a broad range of industries and academic fields. I look forward to bringing what I've learned from all of those experiences into our tutoring sessions.

I have been a peer tutor during my time in college and high school, and I have informally tutored and coached people on their writing for around ten years now. I was awarded a model thesis designation for my undergraduate thesis work, and I frequently received the highest grades in my writing classes and on writing assignments.

In terms of personal writing and application essays, I applied to over 15 colleges while in high school and was accepted to all but two of them. I applied to around 10 law schools, and over the years I have applied to over 60 jobs. I have extensive experience in personal writing, and I look forward to helping you find your voice and effectively express your strengths.

About the lesson

I like to get to know my students first and hear a little bit about their feelings about writing. I know writing is not everyone's favorite process, so getting on a real level of understanding about how you feel about it is a great starting point.

After we've spent some time establishing that groundwork of understanding, I like to tailor my feedback and approach to you personally. If you hate outlining, we can start with free writing instead. If thesis setences freak you out, but you like verbalizing what you're thinking, we'll start with a conversation on the writing topic at hand.

Once we get you comfortable with the assignment at hand on some level, we can move into the nuts and bolts of the task at hand. We may spend a session outlining to organize your thoughts, we may spend a session editing and rewording certain portions of your writing to fine-tune them, or we may have you read your writing out loud to me to practice creating flow and a personal writing voice.

I look forward to exploring writing with you in whatever way works best for you.
