About Claudette

I'm a recent college graduate with a degree in English literature and education from Beloit College. I'm currently working in the nonprofit world as an AmeriCorps VISTA to improve childhood literacy and end poverty. I’m passionate about literature and learning!

I enjoy watching my students learn and grow over time, and seeing a student finish a tough assignment is always rewarding!

I love to read in my spare time, and I always have. From a young age, I knew I wanted to share my passion with others, so I decided to study both literature and education in college. My career path has focused more on indirect public service, but I always enjoy working one on one with students.

I graduated from Beloit College in 2018 with a degree in English literature and education. During my time in college, I student taught in a number of middle and high school classrooms, and I worked as a writing tutor at our campus writing center. For my position as a tutor, I was required to take a course on tutoring.

About the lesson

When working with new students, I like to go over what they'd like to work on and some of their goals. I can't help if I'm not sure what you'd like to get out of our time together. I also try to get to know my students and how they work. For example, do you prefer sitting down and working through an essay all in one go, or do you prefer taking breaks and coming back after a rest?

I have worked with a variety of students from 6th to 12th grade in both public and private school settings. I have also worked with students at a college level.

Literature is a field of study that changes fairly frequently. The formating norms and widely accepted grammar rules have changed significantly even in the last five years. I would reccomend looking for a teacher who focuses on directing you towards and teaching you how to use resources rather than one who has you memorize rules.

As a part of my job, I recently got to attend the local farmers' market and distribute gently used books to children and families for free. I love seeing someone find the perfect book!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Really think about your learning style. If sitting down and focusing on one project for an hour seems overwhelming, let me know, and we can work together to break it down to more managable tasks.

Details

For one time sessions (for assignments and essays), I have a set price of $30/hr. But for longer term tutoring, I am willing to work with my students to create a price that works for both of us.
