About Emma

Hi there! Welcome to your learning journey. As an actor and a writer with a passion for knowledge, it is with gratitude and joy I share what I know with you. Whether this be a new skill, something you're working on for school or professionally, or something you'd just like to know more about, I know we'd be a great fit. I adore what I do. I'm dedicated and driven, and I'd like to think I'm good at communicating how to do it well. Send me a message and let's get started!

I got started teaching at a fairly young age, around 16, when I was in high school. I worked at a youth theatre in my hometown that offered a variety of classes. I would assist there weekly in addition to school and performing and quickly realized that I not only loved it, but was good at it. From there I went on to become an english tutor to my peers throughout the rest of high school. I assistant taught at the Athena Summer Institute, a science course, where I think I honed my communication skills with various ages of students. I've been teaching and coaching ever since.

I graduated from the renown South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities with a dual high school diploma in Drama. This was an intense boarding school training program unlike any other. From there, I moved to New York City where I studied with The Barrow Group theatre company for a year. Following this, I completed the BFA Acting Program at Pace University and minored in Creative Writing with a focus in playwrighting and creative nonfiction. During my time at Pace, I also served as a mentor and returned to the Governor's School to serve as a summer program assistant and acting instructor which was where I discovered my passion for teaching and mentoring younger students. Throughout this entire training process, I have also been a rigorous vocal/singing student with several private instructors.

About the lesson

My typical process begins with a meet and greet. You will get a feel for me and how I work. I will get a feel for what exactly you need. From there, we'll talk about a class or learning path that is specfic to you. If I've learned one thing in my training and in this line of work, it's that the best work comes from discovering how YOU learn and work best. That will be my intial goal for our time together. On top of that, I like to get to know my students, their ideas, their motivations, anything personal they might want to share. We're dealing with being other people and writing from the soul. The more we forge a working connection, the better our work together will be.

I've worked with all kinds of students ranging from age 4 to mid-thirties. I've worked with all kinds of skill levels ranging from people who have no experience and don't even like the artform to people who have trained for many years. I'm a very come as you are, and meet someone where they're at type person. I would like to think this translates to my teaching style.

Take the time to find someone that is right for you. While I feel confident I know enough about my line of work to provide you with valuable knowledge and skills, I think it's important to find someone YOU feel confident about being able to provide you with knowledge and skills. I don't claim to know everything, but I know that with hard work and passion you can get anywhere. So, find someone who matches your drive and energy and willingness to learn and grow before committing to anything.

I recently returned home after a long time away due to Covid. It was the first time seeing many of my extended family since before the pandemic. We had a wonderful time catching up and eating food together. Lots of laughs and stories shared. It was wonderful to be able to share what I do and how I'm doing with them and to hear the same from their ends.

As my favorite teachers have done for me, I like to sit down and ask you, "what can you pay?". We'll go from there. While I do make a living off of these lessons and classes, I never want money to be the thing that gets in the way of you growing as an artist and a person. So, I can give you what my students pay on average or you can give me an idea of what you think is fair, and we can go from there. It's a conversation, not an obstacle.
